Chapter One
“No.”
The word left Marcus Wyndham’s mouth with the sort of finality other men reserved for refusing duels or declining invitations to their own funerals. It was, by his estimation, the fourteenth time he had uttered it that morning, and the day was not yet half spent.
Greaves, the gamekeeper—a wiry, weathered man who had served the Thornfield estate since before Marcus inherited the title, and long before Marcus had acquired the scars that made that title feel like a costume worn by the wrong actor—shifted his weight from one booted foot to the other and tried again.
“Only, Your Grace, the eastern coverts have been overrun with—”
“No.”
“The pheasants alone would—”
“I am aware of the pheasants, Greaves. I do not require company for the sport.”
Greaves opened his mouth, glanced at the Duke’s expression, and closed it again with the quiet resignation of a man who had been losing this particular argument for the better part of a decade. He touched the brim of his hat, murmured “Your Grace” to the space between his boots, and retreated toward the stable yard with the careful backward steps of one withdrawing from the presence of a large and unpredictable animal.
Marcus watched him go. He felt no guilt in the matter. He had ceased to feel guilty about dismissing people some eight years ago, when he had realised that guilt required a belief that one’s company was worth having—and he had long since disabused himself of that notion.
He gathered the reins and turned his horse—a seventeen-hand bay gelding named Brutus, who was the only living creature whose company Marcus actively sought, chiefly because Brutus possessed the good sense never to attempt conversation—toward the western tree line. Behind him, Thornfield Hall rose against the grey November sky like something out of a gothic tale conceived by an architect with a surplus of ambition and a marked deficiency of restraint. Turrets. Gargoyles. A south wing added in the reign of Henry the Eighth and never quite reconciled with the Jacobean main house. It was enormous, impractical, and almost entirely empty, which suited Marcus perfectly.
The steward’s reports could wait. They could always wait. Hargrove was competent—more than competent—and had long since ceased to require Marcus’s input on matters of drainage, tenant rents, and the perennial question of what might be done about the north pasture fence. Marcus paid the man handsomely to manage the estate so that he himself might be left alone to do what he did best, which was nothing of particular value to anyone.
He nudged Brutus into a canter and did not look back at the house.
The woods of Thornfield were vast, ancient, and indifferent—three qualities Marcus valued above almost all others. Oaks that had stood since the Tudors lined the main rides, their branches stripped to black geometry by the waning autumn. The undergrowth lay thick with bracken, turned to copper and rust by the frost, and the air carried the scent of damp earth and decay, sharpened by that mineral tang which heralded either rain or snow, though it had not yet resolved itself into either.
Marcus rode deeper. The sounds of the house—the servants, the chimneys, the faint domestic machinery of a household that persisted in functioning despite its master’s profound disinterest—fell away behind him, replaced by the creak of leather, the steady thud of hooves upon softened ground, and the occasional startled protest of a wood pigeon disturbed from its perch.
He was not at peace here. Marcus Wyndham had not been at peace anywhere since he was nineteen years old and the world had caught fire and taken everything that mattered with it. But in the woods, with the sky pressing down like a grey woollen blanket and no human being within shouting distance, he was at least less at war. The distinction was a fine one, yet after ten years, he had learned to accept what little there was to be had.
The last person who had attempted to ride with him had been his cousin Jasper, who had descended upon Thornfield three months earlier with a trunk full of London fashions and an apparently inexhaustible supply of cheerful observations—on the countryside, the weather, the condition of the roads, the quality of the ale at the village inn, the surprising number of comely milkmaids in the district, and the firm conviction that what Marcus required was “a little fresh air and good company.” Marcus had endured forty minutes of this before the thought had occurred to him—unbidden, unwelcome, and with alarming precision—that fratricide might be an underappreciated remedy for social irritation.
He had flinched at his own thought.
He always flinched at that particular word.
Enough. He shook his head, and Brutus, interpreting the motion as instruction, snorted and tugged at the bit. Marcus gave him his head, and they moved from canter to gallop along the wide ride that ran parallel to the main road. Speed was a relief. It narrowed the world to the immediate—to hooves and ground and air, and the welcome absence of thought.
They had been riding perhaps twenty minutes when Brutus checked sharply, his ears pricking forward. Marcus, whose reflexes had been honed by years of solitary riding over uneven ground, steadied himself and brought the horse to a halt. He listened.
The woods were quiet. Too quiet, in that particular manner which suggested that something had lately disturbed all living things into silence.
Then he heard it—a sound that did not belong to the forest. A thin, carrying voice, muffled by distance and undergrowth, coming from somewhere beyond the embankment that separated the Thornfield woodland from the public road below.
Marcus considered ignoring it. He was exceptionally adept at ignoring things. He had ignored his mother’s letters, his cousin’s visits, his steward’s gentle suggestions regarding the crumbling east terrace, and, for nearly a decade, the general consensus of polite society that the Duke of Thornfield was a tragic, pitiable figure who ought, by all rights, to make some effort to recover himself. He could certainly ignore an indistinct noise from a public road.
He turned Brutus toward the embankment.
The horse picked his way down the slope with the sure-footed caution of an animal well acquainted with the terrain. The descent was steep—a good fifteen feet of scrubby earth and exposed root between the woods above and the road below—and at its base, where the leaf-choked drainage ditch met the rutted lane, Marcus discovered the source of the disturbance.
A gig. Overturned. One wheel still turning with the slow, purposeless rotation of a thing that had lost its function but not yet its momentum. The horse that had drawn it was nowhere to be seen—bolted, no doubt, into the grey distance of a road that led eventually to the village of Thornfield and, beyond that, to a civilisation of sorts. A travelling trunk had burst open upon impact, and its contents—meagre, Marcus observed without intending to observe it; a spare gown, a brush, a few books, a shawl that had seen better decades—were scattered in the mud like the remnants of a modest shipwreck.
And there, crumpled at the base of the embankment as though the earth itself had cast her there and thought no more of it, was a young woman.
She was conscious. That was the first thing he noted. She sat half-upright, propped against the muddy incline, one leg extended at an angle that suggested her ankle was either broken or so badly sprained as to render the distinction irrelevant. There was a cut upon her forehead—not deep, but bleeding freely, as such wounds will, with a dramatic enthusiasm quite disproportionate to their severity. The blood had run down the left side of her face and into the collar of her pelisse, which had once been the colour of faded bluebells and was now additionally that of blood and road mud.
She clutched one of the scattered books to her chest—instinct, perhaps; people seized upon the oddest objects in moments of distress—and she was exceedingly pale beneath the blood and the dirt.
Marcus looked down at her from horseback. He was aware, in some distant and detached fashion, of how he must appear to a young woman alone upon a deserted road—a large man upon a large horse, dark-coated, unsmiling, with the left side of his face a topography of ruined skin that made children weep and adults look hastily away. The scars ran from his temple to his jaw and down his neck, disappearing beneath his collar: a map of a fire he had not been swift enough to escape, and of a night he would never be swift enough to forget. In such light—grey, flat, unforgiving—they would be particularly stark. He waited, as he always waited, for the reaction.
She looked up at him.
Her gaze travelled over his face with the frank, unguarded assessment of someone in too much pain to trouble herself with politeness—taking in the scars, the severity of his expression, the sheer inconvenient size of him—and then she said, in a voice that was absurdly, inexplicably, almost offensively bright:
“Oh, thank goodness. I was beginning to think I should have to crawl.”
Marcus stared.
She smiled at him. It was the sort of smile that suggested the universe was, at heart, well-intentioned, and that overturned gigs, bleeding foreheads, and ruined ankles were merely trifling inconveniences in an otherwise agreeable afternoon. It was the smile of a woman who had either sustained a significant blow to the head or was simply, by nature, incapable of reading a situation.
It was, beyond question, the most irritating thing that had ever happened to him.
“You are hurt,” he said, which was neither useful nor necessary and, he realised too late, precisely the sort of remark that invited further conversation.
“Only a little,” she replied, with the cheerful minimisation of someone very evidently more than a little hurt. She gestured vaguely toward her ankle. “The gig objected to a rut, the horse objected to the gig, and I objected to the embankment. We have all come off rather badly.” She winced as she shifted, and the brightness in her expression faltered—only for an instant, a hairline fracture—before reassembling itself into determined cheer. “The horse went that way, if you are looking for him. Bolted as though personally affronted.”
“I am not looking for a horse.”
“No, I did not suppose you would be. You look like a man in search of absolutely nothing, and deeply resentful at having found something.” She peered up at him through the blood on her face. “Are you from the village? There is a village, is there not? I was assured there would be a village.”
Marcus dismounted. He did so with the mechanical efficiency of a man who had made a decision he already regretted and intended to carry it out with all possible haste, so that he might return to regretting it in greater comfort. Brutus, relieved of his burden, immediately lowered his head to investigate the scattered belongings with the mild curiosity of a creature wholly unconcerned with past or future.
“There is a village,” Marcus said, approaching her with the cautious deliberation of one advancing upon a small, brightly coloured animal that might yet bite. “You should not attempt to move.”
“I had not intended to. Movement and I are no longer on speaking terms.” She regarded the blood upon her fingers with mild astonishment, as though it belonged to someone else and had found its way onto her person by mistake. “I do not think it is so bad as it appears. Head wounds are dreadfully dramatic, are they not? All that blood for what is likely no more than a scratch. Very theatrical.”
She was talking too much. Marcus recognised it at once, for he recognised fear in all its disguises—he had, after all, spent a decade wearing his own. She was frightened and in pain and alone upon a deserted road, and she met it by talking, which was precisely the method most likely to inspire in him the desire to leave her where she lay.
He crouched beside her. At closer inspection, she was younger than he had first supposed—early twenties, perhaps, though the pallor and the blood made certainty difficult. Her hair, brown and escaping its pins in several directions at once, framed a face not remarkable in any single feature—a little too round at the jaw, a little too pointed at the chin—but animated by such determined vitality that it was difficult to look away. Her eyes—wide, watchful, and unreasonably bright—were a grey-green that reminded him, quite against his will, of the lichen upon the garden wall at Thornfield.
He did not wish to notice this. He noticed it nonetheless.
“Can you stand?” he asked.
She made the attempt. The sound she produced—a sharp, stifled intake of breath that she immediately tried to disguise as a laugh—told him all he required.
“Apparently not,” she said, with the air of one mildly disappointed by the development. “The ankle is proving most uncooperative. I have informed it that this is no moment for theatrics, but it appears not to listen.”
“You have been speaking to your ankle.”
“Well, there was no one else until you arrived. One must make do.”
Marcus examined the injury. The ankle was already swelling beneath her stocking, and the careful, protective angle at which she held her foot spoke of a severe sprain at the very least. The cut upon her forehead had slowed its bleeding but would require sutures. She needed a physician. She needed shelter. She needed, in short, to become someone else’s concern with all possible speed.
“My horse can carry you,” he said. “There is a house nearby.”
“Your house?”
“A house.” He was not in the habit of offering explanations, and the distinction between a house and his house seemed, at present, unnecessarily complex.
“That is admirably precise. Is it a comfortable house? Does it possess a roof? I have developed a marked preference for roofs in the last twenty minutes.”
Marcus rose and looked down at her—this mud-streaked, blood-marked, indefatigably cheerful catastrophe of a woman—and experienced an emotion he could not immediately name. It was not sympathy, though there was something adjacent to it. It was not merely irritation, though that was certainly present. It was closer to bewilderment: the particular bewilderment of a man who had arranged his entire existence around the avoidance of others and had, nevertheless, on an unremarkable November morning, discovered one at the bottom of a ditch.
“It has a roof,” he said.
“Then I am content.” She extended her hand to him—small, scraped, and trembling ever so slightly in a manner she plainly hoped would go unnoticed. “I am Charlotte Bright, by the by. Lottie. Everyone calls me Lottie.” She paused. When he did not respond, she added, with a persistence bordering upon heroism, “And you are?”
He took her hand. Her fingers were cold; her grip, unexpectedly firm. She did not flinch when his scarred hand closed around hers—did not hesitate, did not glance at the ruined skin, did not do any of the things people invariably did when confronted with the visible evidence of the worst night of his life.
She simply held on.
“Wyndham,” he said shortly.
“Mr Wyndham?”
He did not correct her. He would address that particular complication later—or, if fortune favoured him, not at all. He bent and lifted her—carefully, efficiently, with the detached competence of a man performing a necessary task—and she was light. Too light. The sort of lightness that spoke of missed meals or diminished portions, and he consigned the observation to that part of his mind which noticed things he would rather not notice and refused to relinquish them.
She smelled faintly of lavender, overlaid with road dust and the bright tang of blood, and when he settled her upon Brutus’s back she seized the pommel with white-knuckled determination and observed, with grave seriousness, “This is a very tall horse.”
“Yes.”
“I mean a very tall horse.”
“I am aware of the horse’s height.”
“Are you always so forthcoming, or am I receiving special consideration?”
Marcus gathered the reins and began to lead Brutus up the embankment, acutely conscious of the woman behind him—her shifting weight, her breath catching upon the steeper ascent, the rigid stillness with which she held herself, as though sheer determination might prevent her from coming apart.
“Oh,” she said, as they reached the top and the woods opened about them, “these are beautiful. Are they yours? They must belong to someone. Everything belongs to someone in the country, I have found—you cannot walk ten feet without trespassing upon a sheep or an earl. Is there an earl involved? You have rather the look of one.”
“There is no earl.”
“A baron, then? You might very well be a baron. Barons, I believe, are permitted to look so forbidding—it may even be required.”
Marcus made no reply. The path through the woods was broad enough for both horse and handler, and the grey November light filtered through the bare branches in thin, cold shafts that illuminated very little. Behind him, Charlotte Bright—Lottie, everyone calls me Lottie—continued to speak.
She spoke of the road. She spoke of the weather. She spoke of the gig horse, whose name, it transpired, was Pudding, and whose disposition was generally most steady—most steady, indeed—except upon those occasions when it decidedly was not, which was, unfortunately, the case today. She considered this a gross injustice, as she had given him the good oats that morning, and one might reasonably expect a degree of gratitude from a horse so favoured.
She spoke of where she had been bound—to her aunt’s house in Thornfield village, a Mrs Hervey; did he happen to know her?—and of where she had come from—a situation as companion to a lady in the neighbouring county, lately concluded. And was it not exceedingly fortunate that he had appeared when he did, for the road had been quite deserted, the sky unpromising, and she had not greatly fancied her chances of reaching the village on one reliable ankle and a measure of optimism.
She inquired after his woods. She inquired after his horse. She informed Brutus that he was “a very handsome and obliging creature,” and Brutus, the traitor, flicked his ears in a manner that suggested he received the compliment with approval.
Marcus replied in grunts. Single syllables. The occasional, reluctant inclination of the head. He had perfected this mode of communication over the course of a decade, and in his experience, it sufficed to discourage even the most persistent of conversationalists.
Miss Charlotte Bright, it seemed, did not fall within the bounds of his experience.
“You are not much given to conversation, are you?” she observed, without the least trace of offence.
“No.”
“That is perfectly acceptable. I talk enough for two. My father used to say I could hold a conversation with a fence post, and that the fence post would come away improved by the exchange.” A pause. Then, more quietly: “He was a vicar—my father. He died two years ago.”
The shift was so sudden—from levity to loss, from chatter to confession—that Marcus very nearly missed it. Very nearly. But he was a man who had spent ten years attending to what lay beneath what was spoken, and he heard the catch in her voice before she smoothed it away.
“I am sorry,” he said. The words emerged roughly, as such sentiments often did from a man long out of practice in offering them.
“Thank you.” The brightness returned at once, swift and seamless as a curtain drawn across a window. “He would have liked these woods. He was very fond of walking. He called any forest ‘a cathedral of trees.’ A trifle dramatic, perhaps, but I believe vicars are permitted a certain licence where trees are concerned.”
Marcus did not reply. There was nothing to be said, and in any case, the path had turned, and through the thinning trees Thornfield Hall came into view.
Behind him, Charlotte Bright fell silent for the first time since he had discovered her.
The silence endured for approximately four seconds.
“Oh—good gracious,” she breathed. “Is that—are those actual turrets? Are you a medieval knight? Do you possess a moat?”
Marcus closed his eyes briefly, opened them again, and continued walking.
He was bringing a stranger into his house. A chattering, bleeding, lavender-scented stranger who admired gargoyles, named her horse after pudding, and did not so much as flinch at the sight of a man who had spent ten years ensuring that flinching was the only reasonable response.
This was a practical decision. There was a physician who attended the Hall. The house was nearer than the village. It was practical, sensible, efficient.
He repeated this to himself.
He was not entirely convinced.
Behind him, Charlotte Bright was asking whether the gargoyles possessed names, and Marcus Wyndham, sixth Duke of Thornfield—who had not voluntarily shared a meal with another human being in three years, and who had constructed his entire existence upon the principle that other people were a complication he could not afford—found that he had no answer to give. Not because he did not know, but because no one had ever thought to ask.
Chapter Two
“Do the gargoyles have names?”
Marcus did not trouble himself to respond. He led Brutus along the gravel sweep toward the entrance of Thornfield Hall with the grim resolve of a man conveying cargo—which, he reminded himself, was precisely the case. He was conveying an injured woman from a ditch to a house where a physician might be found. It was not charity. It was logistics.
“Because I think that one looks like a Geoffrey,” Charlotte Bright continued, craning her neck toward the nearest grotesque with an enthusiasm wholly disproportionate to her condition. “The one with the underbite. Very Geoffrey.”
“The gargoyles do not have names.”
“Well, they do now. That is Geoffrey. And the one over the east window is unmistakably a Mildred.”
Marcus closed his eyes for a count of three—which was all the patience he could reasonably spare—and addressed the matter with the same blunt practicality he applied to drainage reports and recalcitrant tenants.
“Miss Bright.”
“Lottie.”
“Miss Bright. I am bringing you here because this house is nearer than the village, and because the physician, Mr Hale, attends here regularly. It is a practical decision.”
“Of course it is.”
“It is not an invitation.”
“I did not suppose it was.”
“It is a practical decision,” he repeated, as though the reiteration might lend the statement greater authority—if not to her, then at least to himself. He had lived alone in a house of forty rooms for nearly a decade. He did not bring people home. He brought no one home. The last uninvited guest had been a bat in the east wing, and Marcus had found the bat decidedly less disruptive than the woman presently assigning names to his architectural features.
She shifted upon Brutus’s back, and he heard the sharp catch of her breath—swiftly suppressed, swiftly buried beneath her next remark, but unmistakable. She was in more pain than she would admit. Of course she was. He had known it from the moment he found her, smiling through blood as though a head wound were no more than a minor social inconvenience.
“It is a practical decision,” he said for the third time, and now the words were not meant for her at all.
He brought Brutus to a halt before the steps. The Hall rose above them—three storeys of grey stone, Tudor in structure, Jacobean in embellishment, and marked throughout by that quiet, expensive neglect which comes of a house maintained but not truly inhabited. The windows were clean, though uncurtained above. The steps were swept, though the urns that flanked them stood empty, as they had for years, since Marcus had dismissed the notion of filling them with anything so frivolous as flowers.
Lottie regarded the house as she had regarded the woods—with frank, uncomplicated wonder. Not with calculation, not with assessment; not as the ladies of the ton might, weighing its value in acres and income. She looked at it as a child might look upon a castle in a storybook, and Marcus, not knowing what to make of such a reaction, did what he always did when confronted with the incomprehensible: he ignored it.
“Can you dismount, or shall I—”
“I can manage.” She could not. She swung her good leg over with some degree of competence, but the moment her weight shifted, her face went starkly pale and she clutched at the saddle with both hands. Marcus caught her before she fell—one arm about her waist, taking her weight against his chest—and for a single, disconcerting instant she was close enough that he could discern the pattern of drying blood upon her temple, the dark sweep of her lashes, the faint dusting of freckles across her nose that powder might have concealed, had she possessed any.
She looked up at him. At his face. At the scars.
And this—this—was what Marcus could not account for. The variable that refused to conform to any expectation he had ever formed regarding how people responded to the ruin of his face. She looked at his scars as she looked at everything else: the gargoyles, the turrets, the bare branches, the grey sky. With open, uncomplicated interest. The same bright attentiveness she afforded the whole of the world, as though the world were a collection of quietly fascinating objects, and his scars were merely one among them. No horror. No pity. No careful avoidance, which was worse than either.
Simply… looking. As though he were a man.
It was, in its way, more unsettling than horror. Horror he understood. He had had ten years’ practice in meeting it with cold indifference until it withdrew. But this—this steady, unguarded attention—left him entirely without defence. He did not know how to answer it.
“You are very strong,” she observed, in the same tone one might use to remark upon the likelihood of rain.
“You are very light.” He set her down—carefully, one hand still at her elbow until he was certain she could balance upon her good foot—and then stepped back to a distance that felt marginally safer. “The physician must see to that ankle.”
“It is only a sprain.”
“You do not know that.”
“I prefer to believe it so. Optimism is free, Mr Wyndham, and I cannot afford the alternatives.” She hopped forward upon her good foot, steadied herself against the stone balustrade, and surveyed the front door with the air of one presented with an unexpectedly lavish gift. “Are you quite certain this is a house? It seems more like a small country. I believe there may be a separate climate over the west wing.”
Marcus did not smile. He had not smiled in—he could not, in fact, recall when, which was perhaps answer enough. Yet something at the corner of his mouth stirred, unbidden, before he suppressed it and restored his expression to its accustomed severity.
He took her arm—because she could not walk, and because to leave her to ascend the steps of Thornfield Hall like an unsteady sparrow would have been both impractical and absurd—and guided her through the front door into the entrance hall.
The entrance hall of Thornfield had been designed to intimidate. Forty feet of vaulted ceiling, dark oak panelling, a staircase broad enough to accommodate a carriage, and the kind of echoing, sepulchral stillness that suggested the house itself disapproved of noise. Marcus had always found it appropriate. It suited his temperament as a mausoleum suits its occupant.
Lottie lifted her gaze to the ceiling, then to the staircase, then to the portrait gallery along the upper landing—generations of Wyndhams gazing down with the collective disapproval of men who had never been inconvenienced by an overturned gig or a woman inclined to name gargoyles.
“This,” she said, with the quiet certainty of one arriving at a profound conclusion, “is the most extraordinary house I have ever entered. And I once toured Chatsworth on a Tuesday when the family was away.”
“It is draughty,” Marcus said. “And the water supply is unreliable.”
“Oh, I care nothing for the water supply. Look at that moulding.” She gestured toward the plasterwork above the staircase with the hand not gripping his arm. “Is that original? It cannot be. That is Elizabethan work—or I am very much mistaken.”
“You are not mistaken.”
“Then it is Elizabethan. Mr Wyndham, you are living in a masterpiece.”
Marcus followed her gaze to the plasterwork, which he had not truly observed—had not considered with any degree of attention—in longer than he could remember. It was, he supposed, rather fine. One ceased to notice such things, in time. A house became merely a container for one’s own discontent; the walls were only walls, the ceilings only ceilings, and the ornamentation no more than another feature in a space where a life had once existed, and no longer did.
She was still looking at it. Still marvelling. And the unsettling thing—the thing that lodged beneath his ribs like a splinter—was that her wonder was genuine. There was no performance in it, no flattery directed at the man to whom the house belonged. She was not attempting to impress him. She was simply delighted, as one is delighted by a sunset or a well-turned phrase, and that delight demanded nothing of him in return.
He did not like how it made him feel. He did not like that it made him feel anything at all.
“The physician,” he said, in the tone of a man determined to restore a conversation to safer ground. “I shall send for Mr Hale. You will wait here.”
“In the entrance hall?”
“In a room. A guest room. There are rooms.” He was handling this badly, and he knew it. The difficulty lay in the fact that his household had not accommodated a guest in years, and his social instincts—never particularly reliable, and further diminished by a decade of disuse—were failing him with remarkable thoroughness. “My housekeeper will see to it.”
“You have a housekeeper?”
“I have a house. Houses have housekeepers.”
“Not all houses. Mrs Dalrymple’s had a woman she called a housekeeper, but the woman was more a gaoler with a better title.” The name passed quickly, like a shadow across bright water. “But I am sure yours is delightful.”
Marcus thought of Mrs Calloway—five feet two inches of Scottish pragmatism, unwavering loyalty, and a tongue sharp enough to fillet a salmon at twenty paces—and decided that delightful was not the word he would have chosen. He also decided that correcting her could wait.
He settled Charlotte Bright in a chair in the entrance hall, instructed her not to move, and went in search of Mrs Calloway.
He found her in the stillroom, engaged in the quiet industry of preserving that occupied her November afternoons. She looked up at his entrance with the composed lack of surprise of a woman who had managed both his household and his temper for eight years and had long since ceased to be astonished by either.
“There is a woman in the entrance hall,” Marcus said.
Mrs Calloway set down a jar of preserved plums. “I beg your pardon, Your Grace?”
“A woman. In the entrance hall. She was involved in an accident on the road. Her ankle is injured, and she has a cut to her head. I require that Mr Hale be sent for, and that a guest room be prepared.” He paused. “A modest one.”
Mrs Calloway’s eyebrows rose by perhaps an eighth of an inch, which, by her standards, constituted marked astonishment.
“She will remain only until the physician has attended her,” Marcus continued. “It is a practical arrangement.”
“Of course, Your Grace.”
“That is all.”
“That is all,” she agreed, in a tone that conveyed with perfect clarity that she believed it to be very much not all, but she was a woman who chose her moments, and this was not one of them.
Marcus returned to the entrance hall to find Lottie precisely where he had left her, save that she had somehow acquired one of the old estate maps from the side table and was studying it with the absorbed concentration of a cartographer newly presented with an unexplored continent.
“Mr Wyndham,” she said, without looking up, “did you know you have a lake?”
He did know he had a lake. He had not thought of it in something like six years.
“The physician is being sent for,” he said. “Mrs Calloway will prepare a room.”
She lifted her head from the map. Her face remained streaked with drying blood, her hair was in disarray, and her smile—that inexplicable, irrepressible, wholly unwarranted smile—was as bright as ever. She looked like a woman who had been deposited unceremoniously into a muddy ditch and had emerged persuaded that the experience had been, on the whole, rather interesting.
“Thank you,” she said. Simply, warmly, without affectation. “Truly. You have been very kind.”
“I have not been kind,” Marcus replied, because he had not. He had been practical. There was a distinction, and it mattered—for kindness implied care, and care implied connection, and connection implied a willingness to be affected by another person, and Marcus Wyndham had not been willing to be affected by anyone for ten years.
She tilted her head and regarded him—at him, not past him, not skirting his scars for some imagined version of his former face—and said, with the quiet certainty of one accustomed to seeing what others overlooked:
“If you say so, Mr Wyndham.”
She returned her attention to the map. Marcus stood in his own entrance hall, in his own house, and felt—for the first time in longer than he could reckon—as though the walls had shifted. As though the rooms had rearranged themselves around some newly established centre of gravity. As though something had entered Thornfield Hall uninvited, unwelcome, and yet—for reasons he refused to examine—not to be turned away.
He went in search of Mrs Calloway once more, because Mrs Calloway was predictable, and predictability had been the only thing holding the last ten years together.
Behind him, Charlotte Bright gave a small exclamation of delight that rose into the vaulted ceiling and drifted into the silent upper floors of a house that had not heard such a sound in a very long time.
Chapter Three
“You poor lamb,” said Mrs Calloway, in a tone that left it entirely uncertain whether she referred to the injury or to the general state of Miss Charlotte Bright’s existence.
Lottie—who had been conveyed from the entrance hall chair into Mrs Calloway’s brisk jurisdiction in the time it had taken Marcus to see Brutus handed off to a somewhat bewildered stable boy—found herself subjected to the practised scrutiny of a woman who had spent thirty years managing households, ailments, and the emotional catastrophes of the aristocracy, and who regarded all three with much the same unsentimental competence.
“It truly is not so bad as it appears,” Lottie said, which was what she had been saying since the ditch, and which had not been believed on any prior occasion.
“Mmm,” said Mrs Calloway, in the Scottish manner that might signify anything from I am entirely in agreement to you are a fool, and I shall demonstrate it presently. She took Lottie’s chin between thumb and forefinger, turned her face toward the light, and examined the cut upon her forehead with the detached efficiency of a seasoned practitioner. “That will require sutures. And the ankle?”
“Opinionated.”
“I did not inquire after its disposition, lass. I asked for its condition.”
“Swollen. Unhappy. Entirely opposed to bearing weight.”
Mrs Calloway released her chin, straightened, and addressed Marcus, who lingered in the doorway of the entrance hall with the air of a man who had completed his portion of a task and was now awaiting formal dismissal.
“The blue room, Your Grace?”
“The green room,” Marcus said. The blue room lay within the family wing; the green room in the guest corridor—modest, removed, and safely distant from those parts of the house he actually occupied. “She does not require—”
“The green room,” Mrs Calloway agreed, in the particular tone that suggested she had already resolved upon the green room and had merely introduced the alternative to observe his response. Marcus suspected she had been conducting such quiet experiments upon him for years. He further suspected she found the results instructive.
Getting Lottie up the staircase proved an undertaking Marcus had no intention of joining—and then joined nonetheless. Mrs Calloway took one side, and Marcus, summoned by a look from his housekeeper that might have curdled fresh milk, took the other, and between them they conveyed Miss Bright up eighteen steps while she apologised for the inconvenience, admired the carving of the banister, inquired whether the portrait upon the first landing was a Lely or a Kneller, and thanked them both with a sincerity so warm and unaffected that Mrs Calloway’s expression softened by several degrees—an occurrence Marcus had not previously believed possible.
The green room was precisely as Marcus had intended: modest. A single window overlooking the south garden; faded wallpaper patterned with ivy and small flowers; a bed made up in clean, if unremarkable, linens; a washstand; a wardrobe; and curtains that had once been a vivid emerald and were now the colour of moss in November—that is to say, green in the manner of memory: a suggestion rather than a fact.
Lottie looked about the room with the same expression she had worn since the entrance hall—that open, uncalculating delight which made Marcus feel as though he were seeing his own house through a window he had not known existed.
“This crewelwork is lovely,” she said, settling upon the edge of the bed with a wince she very nearly concealed. She passed her hand over the quilt—old, a little worn, entirely serviceable. “Oh, such neat stitching.”
“My grandmother’s,” Mrs Calloway said, and then paused, as though surprised to have offered the information.
“She was very skilled. The chain stitch along the border—that is not easily done. My mother used to work crewel. She never mastered the chain stitch, though. She said it required more patience than she possessed—which was saying something, as she was married to a vicar.”
Mrs Calloway’s mouth altered in a manner Marcus had not witnessed in years.
She smiled.
Not broadly, nor warmly, nor with the unguarded brightness Lottie herself employed so freely—but the corners of her mouth lifted, and her eyes creased. For the span of perhaps three seconds, Mrs Calloway—who had maintained an unassailable bastion of Scottish reserve through a decade of the Duke’s gloom, three outbreaks of influenza in the servants’ hall, and the occasion upon which the east wing chimney caught fire and she extinguished it herself with a bucket and a very decided sense of personal affront—smiled at a stranger she had known but a few minutes.”
Marcus regarded this development as one might regard a cat engaged in arithmetic.
“I shall bring water and clean linen,” Mrs Calloway said, recovering herself. “Mr Hale has been sent for. He should arrive within the hour.” She lowered her voice slightly as she added, “Your Grace, perhaps you would—”
“I was just leaving,” Marcus said.
“I was about to suggest that you send a boy down to the road for Miss Bright’s belongings. They will not improve for lying in the mud.”
“Quite.” He had forgotten the trunk, the scattered books, the shawl that had seen better decades. A woman’s entire portable existence, strewn across a ditch. “I shall see to it.”
He turned to go. Behind him, Lottie’s voice followed—lighter now, though edged with fatigue, and still impossibly warm:
“Thank you, Mr Wyndham. For everything.”
He did not turn back. To do so would require looking at her, and looking at her had already become, in the space of a single morning, an exercise fraught with complications he had no desire to examine.
“The physician will see you right,” he said to the doorframe, and left.
Mr Edwin Hale arrived some forty minutes later, which was prompt for a country physician and suggested that Mrs Calloway’s summons had carried a degree of urgency she did not extend lightly—a category Marcus had not expected to include a stranger with a sprained ankle. Hale was a calm, methodical man in his middle fifties—grey at the temples, steady of hand, possessed of that quiet competence which inspires confidence before a word is spoken. He had served as physician to Thornfield for twenty years, had attended Marcus’s father in his final illness, and had been a friend to Marcus’s younger brother Edward, offering the sort of steady guidance older men sometimes gave to bright, restless youth.”
Marcus did not think about this. He made a point of not thinking about this every time he saw Hale, which was approximately twice a month when the man called to check on Marcus’s knee.
Hale went upstairs. Marcus remained in his study—which was what he termed the room in which he sat, ostensibly occupied with estate business, and in reality stared at the same page of accounts until the figures dissolved into irrelevance. He was not waiting for the physician’s report. He was merely in his study. That was all.
Hale returned after twenty minutes.
“A bad sprain,” he said, settling into the chair opposite Marcus’s desk and helping himself to the whisky he had not been offered but knew he was at liberty to take. “Not a fracture, thank goodness, but she must keep off it. A week at the least—two, if she is sensible.”
“Is she sensible?”
Hale considered. “She is cheerful.”
“That was not the question.”
“No, but it is the answer I have. She spoke throughout the entire examination. I am now acquainted with her father—a vicar, deceased these two years; her sister—Ada, seventeen, and clever; and her aunt—a Mrs Hervey, who resides locally. She complimented my stitching, inquired where I trained, and suggested I employ a finer needle next time for a neater result.” He took a measured sip of whisky. “I have practised medicine for twenty-seven years, and no patient has ever offered me advice on my needlework.”
“The forehead?”
“Three stitches. A clean wound. It will heal well—she will have a small scar, nothing of consequence.”
Marcus said nothing. The word scar settled between them with its usual, unspoken weight, and Hale—who possessed both the perception to note it and the discretion to leave it undisturbed—continued.
“She requires rest, warmth, regular meals, and someone to ensure she does not attempt to walk upon that ankle prematurely. I shall call again in three days.” He set aside his glass. “Will she remain here, or shall I arrange for her conveyance to the village?”
This was the moment. The clean, practical resolution Marcus had been constructing since the ditch—the moment at which the injured stranger became the responsibility of the village. Her aunt resided in Thornfield. The aunt would take her in. Marcus would send the carriage, settle the physician’s fee as a matter of ordinary decency, and return to the vast, orderly silence of a life carefully arranged to exclude all others.
“I shall send word to her aunt,” he said. “She may make the necessary arrangements.”
“Very good.” Hale rose and gathered his bag. At the door, he paused. “She is an unusual young woman.”
“She talks too much.”
“That is not what I meant.” Hale gave him a look Marcus had no inclination to interpret. “Good day, Your Grace.”
Marcus sent word to Mrs Hervey. He attended to the estate accounts that had been waiting since morning. He took his luncheon alone in the study, as he always did, and he did not think about the woman upstairs in the green room, who was by now cleaned, bandaged, and would shortly be gone.
He did not think about her.
He went upstairs to confirm this.
The door to the green room stood open. Mrs Calloway had been thorough—the blood and road dust were gone, the injured ankle propped upon pillows and neatly bound, and Charlotte Bright sat upright in bed, arrayed in a borrowed nightgown somewhat too large for her, likely Mrs Calloway’s, studying the ceiling with the absorbed attention of a visitor at the Royal Academy.
“The moulding,” she said, without looking at him—as though his presence were merely a natural continuation of whatever discourse she had been conducting with the architecture. “Look at that ceiling moulding. It is exquisite. Is it original plasterwork? Because if it is, Mr Wyndham, this room alone must be worth more than most houses I have lived in—and I have lived in a vicarage, which is, in a manner of speaking, a respectable competitor.”
She addressed him as though he were an acquaintance of years rather than a man she had met but hours before in a ditch. As though the scars, the severity, the carefully maintained barrier of indifference he had constructed over a decade were of no consequence at all. As though the only matter of importance was the present exchange, and the present exchange was: observe this ceiling.
Mrs Calloway, stationed by the washstand and folding linen, was smiling again. Twice in a single day. Marcus suspected this constituted a record.
“It is original,” he said, from the doorway. Entering the room felt like a concession he was not yet prepared to grant.
“Jacobean?”
“Earlier. This wing is Tudor.”
“Tudor.” She breathed the word with something like reverence. “Mr Wyndham, you must understand—I have been in this bed for twenty minutes and have already fallen quite hopelessly in love with this ceiling. You may be obliged to have me removed by force.”
“The physician recommends a week. Possibly two.”
“Then I shall have a fortnight in which to cultivate my attachment to the plasterwork. Mrs Calloway, were you aware of this ceiling? It is quite extraordinary.”
“I have not made a habit of studying ceilings, Miss Bright.”
“Then someone ought to. It has been sadly neglected.” She said it lightly, but the word—neglected—settled in the room with more weight than she had intended. Her eyes flicked toward Marcus, then away. Swift. Deliberate. As though she had glimpsed something not meant for observation and had chosen, consciously, not to remark upon it.
Marcus shifted in the doorway. The room was warm—Mrs Calloway had lit the fire, and the late-morning light through the south-facing window lent a faint copper brightness to the escaped strands of Lottie’s hair. She looked different, cleaned and composed. Smaller. Younger. The cut upon her forehead had been neatly dressed, and without the distraction of blood and mud, her face was—he noted this with the detached precision of a man cataloguing a detail he did not intend to dwell upon—fine-boned, pale, and animated by a light he could not readily name.
She was looking at him now, her head inclined at that particular angle which, he was beginning to suspect, preceded a question.
“Mr Wyndham,” she said. “May I ask you something?”
“You have been asking me things since the ditch. I do not see how my permission signifies.”
She smiled—the unguarded one, bright and direct—and said, “A fair point. Are you the estate manager?”
“No.”
“The steward?”
“No.”
She narrowed her eyes. “The groundskeeper, then? You have a decidedly groundskeeper-like air. It is the coat. And the general—” She gestured vaguely in his direction. “Outdoors-ness.”
Marcus glanced down at himself—mud-splashed boots, dark riding coat, the plain, practical attire of a man who dressed with no expectation of notice—and then back at Charlotte Bright, who sat in his guest room, in his house, wearing his housekeeper’s nightgown, having just assessed the Duke of Thornfield and concluded that he was in his own employ.
“I am the Duke of Thornfield,” he said.
The words were delivered without emphasis, stripped of the significance they bore in other settings—in London drawing rooms, in solicitors’ correspondence, in the murmured conjecture of a county that had spent ten years speculating about the scarred recluse in the great house. He stated it as one might state a preference or a fact of habit: something neither remarkable nor especially relevant.
Lottie blinked.
Her mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.
“Oh,” she said.
A pause. Marcus waited. This was the moment—the pivot, the instant at which every person he encountered beyond the insulated confines of Thornfield recalibrated. He knew the progression precisely. First surprise. Then assessment—of his person, his bearing, his worth—followed by the inevitable adjustment: posture altered, tone softened, attention sharpened into something altogether less honest. Deference might follow. Or calculation. Or that bright, acquisitive admiration society so often mistook for sincerity.
He had seen every variation.
He waited for hers.
“Well,” Lottie said, “that explains the turrets.”
No curtsy. No abrupt straightening of the spine. No sudden Your Grace affixed to every sentence. No shift in her gaze—those grey-green eyes that had regarded him in precisely the same manner since the ditch, since the horse, since the entrance hall—with interest, with warmth, with a complete and confounding absence of adjustment.
She was surprised—yes, that much was evident. A duke who retrieved injured women from ditches, who rode unattended, who wore muddy boots and might reasonably be mistaken for his own groundskeeper—such a figure did not align with any conventional notion of rank. But her surprise remained just that: surprise. The sort one experiences upon discovering some unexpected but not especially transformative fact.
She did not change.
Marcus waited for the change. He stood in the doorway and waited, and the seconds extended, and she continued to look at him—still Lottie, still bright, still entirely and inexplicably herself—and the change did not come.
“I ought probably to have curtsied,” she said at last, thoughtfully. “Earlier. In the ditch. It would have been a challenge, given the ankle, but I feel the attempt might have been appreciated.”
“It would not have been appreciated.”
“Good. Because it would have been dreadful. I am quite poor at curtsying, even when both ankles are in proper working order.” She plucked lightly at the sleeve of the borrowed nightgown. “Your Grace. Should I address you so? It seems excessively formal for a gentleman who has seen me covered in mud and horse-related indignity.”
“You may call me whatever you please, Miss Bright. You have done so thus far without difficulty.”
She laughed. It was not a remarkable sound—neither musical nor particularly refined, none of the qualities novels ascribed to a heroine’s laugh. It was simply a laugh: bright, unguarded, genuine. It filled the green room, touched the Tudor plasterwork, and settled into the corners of a house that had not heard laughter in a very long time.
Marcus turned and left before he could consider why the sound struck his chest like a stone dropped into still water, sending quiet ripples into places he had long believed undisturbed.
