The story was good. But the atrocious writing and editing had me thinking someone else finished the last 2/3 of the novel. More like a first draft. I really enjoyed this story. I read a lot of this genre and Ms Barwood came up with a new twist to get her star crossed lovers together. Unfortunately the last five pages of my Kindle version are so thoroughly mis-edited that it was almost impossible to follow. Tedious and repeating thoughts
There is a lot right with this story, but also a lot wrong. The characters are inside their head so much the story becomes tedious. The growing romance as they start to court was interesting to watch, but the story had too many idioms that are used in modern times, especially the American ones. All the characters are well-developed and their personalities kept me interested in the story. Why are all mothers either pushy, know-it-alls or just plain selfish or evil. They don’t want what’s best for their daughters, but what makes them look better to society in whole. Oh, I’m a good mother because my daughter married an Earl instead of a Viscount, even if the Earl beats his wife and smells like a sewer. And the father just hems and haws and lets his wife does as he pleases. The plot idea was excellent but the storyline was not executed nearly as well as the plot. Unfortunately, the epilogue’s didn’t even make sense after the final climax. Oh, there go the tedious and repeating thoughts again!March 15, 2024

Storyline was okay
But like other reviews, I found the grammar and rushed ending off putting. The epilogue sounded like it should’ve happened before the wedding. There was no transition from their declarations of love to the wedding. Even a chapter break would’ve made more sense than having it in the next paragraph. Other reviews mentioned idioms and historically inaccuracies; the one that jarred me was something happened “under the radar”—what?!? In the Regency era?? Who did the editing? They should be more discerning.December 9, 2023

A good story
Martha Harwood has a talent for an excellent story. Unfortunately, she would give my high school English teacher fits. Vacillating between centuries, it tends to jolt the reader from time to time (pun intended). I’m pretty certain phrases like mind blowing weren’t in use in the regency era. Of course, I could be wrong. But the double negatives and the terrible sentence structure are something I find most distracting. I, nevertheless, shall keep reading because Ms. Barwood has great potential!December 3, 2023

Poor grammar and word choice spoil the flow of this story
Unfortunately I struggled to finish this book. I became frustrated with poor grammar, missing words ans phrases and bizarre word choices. The tale had promise but would require more extensive editing to make it enjoyable for me. I also felt that the conversations and thoughts of the characters were either too brief or far too wordy and repetitive. Once again better editing would improve this. While set in the Regency period, many words, settings and descriptions were not typical of this era. For instance the use of the word okay, and the ink on a dance card when the gentleman wrote on it was jarring. Pencil would have been used as there’s no way a young woman would carry around pen and ink at an assembly or ball! I’m sorry I can’t recommend the book but as mentioned I do believe the story had promise.November 25, 2023

Not the best writing
Quite a lot of poor or bad English. Endless improbable musings and awkward dialog. Even some modern slang! And a strange accident at the end which could not have happened as the heroine never left her house unescorted. Inexplicably, she did so and walked into a trap. Another theme of scarred characters.November 6, 2023

Romance Despite Interfering Parents
Lady Genevieve is the only child of the Duke and Duchess of Montmere, who is also a Diamond of the first water and highly sought after. Genevieve’s mother will have her make a “good” match, meaning a wealthy Earl or Duke, and it just happens that Lady Genevieve is being sought by an Earl who sends he flowers daily, and steps on her feet at all the balls. Viscount James Hamilton was terribly scarred in the war, and he is accustomed to being refused by ladies of the Ton, but Genevieve is different. Their eyes caught and held, and he wished his scars away, and was saddened by the disdain on the face of the Duchess when he asked Genevieve to dance. The Viscount fit all of Genevieve’s requirements for a husband, but none of her mother’s, and he was asked by the Duchess to stay away from her daughter. The Duchess wishes for her to encourage the Earl instead, so what is a young lady to do? This is a well written romance that does have a HEA, and good philosophical messages for the heart.June 25, 2023

Couldn’t get through it because of inconsistencies
Im not sure if I’ve ever left a review of a book before but this one bothered me so much i had to day something. There were many, many editing errors which annoyed me enough, with examples being places where the author probably was deciding between two phrases but both were typed out and one wasn’t entirely removed, or forgetting verbs and transitions, and quotation marks were all off throughout the book. That was very distracting but the story was boring me a little so i couldn’t stay sucked in to the plot. I don’t understand why the main character had such strong feelings about blue eyes, or why she says they’re so rare. The author seemed to have a few different ideas about how things should go that didn’t make sense in the book because it doesn’t seem like she totally committed to one direction. The POVs show two very different encounters, and the more they look back on various events the more they’re adding embellishments and details that were not described in the initial encounter. It’s like Did I miss something? When did that happen? Which kind of tells you two things; that it’s not memorable or that the author was missing some thoughts. For a character to mert someone, a potential suitor for the first time, and dislike them so much with little to no dialogue between the two chatacters is odd especially because that’s a major, if not the only, conflict in the story. As for conflicting POVs, the two main characters were contradicting not only each other’s version of their meeting but then how they felt towards each other at their second meeting. The man initially feels disgust for her because of how she reacted to seeing his scar, but the next time he saw her he was still thinking about her and worried she’d reject him. She was not disgusted by him, despite her slip of a facial expression, and she immediately had feeelings for him. He didn’t show any ager at her when they met the second time and they had a good time. He thought he was really awkward and should have spoken more, from her narration it seemed like he was charming and talking just fine. I did skip through from about 40% to like 75%. I would agree with people who said the ending was rushed. Her parents had completely different feelings in like 2%. It’s not explained how her mother found the list. He doesn’t really have any conflict with asking for her hand, although I was able to skim through that her mother yelled at him and told him to stay away. Then at the ending it switches over to the sister’s betrothed POV for a paragraph while he proposes? Kind of odd. I’ve read other books in this series and I don’t remember having such a hard time reading any of them. The editing was lacking, and the plot was kind of boring. I skimmed through a bunch of their inner rambling while waiting for dialogue. Book could definitely be improved.June 13, 2023

The idea for the story is fine. The middle gets boring with too much repetition concerning James’s memories. The couple needed a couple more times to meet and get to know each other before the end of the book. There was a lot of angst as the story went on and on. After a lot of skimming, and at the exciting conclusion it was obvious that a great deal of text was missing. Also, the ending was rushed. At the point where the story should have been elaborated, the author seemed to be tired of writing, and the book ended abruptly. I was not able to access the extended epilogue, but don’t like them, anyway. It is only a manipulative device which allows the author access to your email address. Martha Barwood … The Scarred Viscount’s Redemption
This Regency Romance was an excellent read! James was the ‘spare’ son, who enlisted himself in the army and found a home for himself in the military. He suffered a huge, gaping, red scar down one side of his face that caused him to become a recluse in his country estate when he was released from to army after the deaths of both his father and his older brother. But now his ‘duty’ to his younger sister, Alice, requires he spend the season in London to see that his sister makes a love match. The first weeks of the season bring plotting mamas, James’ efforts to gain investors in his homegrown tea, and how to manage his attraction to a duke’s beautiful daughter even though he is considered an outcast by the ton. This qualifies as drivel.
Apparently no research was done prior to writing this collection of words. I am not certain this author has ever read a well written book from this period. Using the word conscription in reference to James entering the military is just wrong. James volunteered he was not mandated by the English government to join the service Tea wasn’t a crop in England until 2003. The tea plant takes 7-8 years to mature for picking. This would have been a long term investment for James. Petulant female and brooding male characters are so over used. It would be refreshing to see a different approach. My suggestion to both the author and reader alike. Spend your time reading well known authors of this period in England.April 26, 2023

Ending should have been more fleshed out
The first half of this book was filled with a lot of rambling thoughts James and Genevieve were having. Sometimes the thoughts went back and forth so much between things from the past, the present and thoughts of the future that it was confusing to try to follow and it became boring. Genevieve seemed to mostly ponder about James’s blue eyes. It became annoyingly repetitive. The second half of the book was better. The ending was interesting but then things wrapped up mid-chapter in a rambling fashion. There should have been a break before the ending came so fast. The epilogue cut off midsentence. Great plot but the author should have taken more time with the ending and not been so caught up in the first half of the book with mental ponderings of the characters. It was like the author was worried in the beginning about trying to just get to a certain number of words.April 20, 2023

Perfection is overrated
James, now Viscount Hamilton, has been badly scarred during his time as a soldier. He has kept himself away from London, knowing full well that the ton will never accept him due to his marred countenance, but is now forced to go there in order to promote a successful match for his sister, who is about to enter her third season. His mother also wishes for him to marry and produce an heir. Genevieve is the daughter of the Duke of Montmere and despite having been named the diamond of the Season by the Queen upon her debut last season, remains unmarried. This is not due to a lack of proposals, but rather to her father’s exacting standards. When the couple meet, James assumes that Genevieve is disgusted by his appearance like so many other ladies. Genevieve has made a list of the qualities she is looking for in a husband, and as the couple continue to meet socially, she realises that James fulfils many of her requirements, but there is the problem of his scarred visage. Genevieve’s mother will accept nothing less than perfection in her family’s life, and when she discovers that her daughter is developing feelings for the scarred Viscount, she is horrified and warns James away. I liked the storyline a lot and the way in which Genevieve realised that perfection is not everything, and that James has far more substance to him than so many of the young men around her. Unfortunately there were some errors that I found irritating. For example, Genevieve wore a morning dress which is then described as having been an evening gown that she wore at the end of the last season. Also there were words used incorrectly and I do not believe that Genevieve would ever use the word wow. These may seem like minor quibbles, but they do spoil my enjoyment slightly. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.April 18, 2023
