Very good story over all but took a long time to get to parts that make you not want to put the book down. Started off fairly well grabbing my attention, but some fizzled out because of so much explanation. A bit disappointing
Personally I found this story stretched the boundaries of believability. No explanation is given regarding the reason for commoners to be invited to a ball with the ton. I can still understand the major and his wife, as landed gentry and then their companion, but Evie? Some of the actions and speech also felt way to modern. At around the 68-69% mark I seriously considered quiting because of the actions of the MFC. Seriously, her backbone disintegrated! And the MMC wasn’t much better. Thankfully it picked up. The ending was sweet. There are several mistakes throughout, like his, instead of her; dare, instead of dear; her, instead of his…etc. Overall it was ok but it really felt like a contemporary stuffed into a regency stocking. At the end there is a link for an extended epilogue (not a fan of this) but be warned, you have to give your name and email to access it. It then goes straight to the extended epilogue. A Solid, Entertaining HEA
This novel started so dramatically with a fright account of great loss. The many types of scars knit together an impregnate wall between the duke and the world. The love of a faithful friend and the mysterious fascination of a unique woman slowly tear down the fabric of fears that separated Emerson from those around him. There were no obnoxious ladies or debtors prison to add drama but realistic, mature reactions and responses that lend lovely solutions to life’s problems. Does the dike find happiness? The extended epilogue (which I don’t like) was really worth reading. It’s very short but very informative. I recommend this for older teens and adult as a clean and sweet romance that includes a picture of childbirth. I will read more from this author.March 13, 2024

Few nit picking about names: Best friend: Bob – just a weird name for that period, Bob is a nickname. He would have been named Robert then. There was no indication it was only what his friends called him. So just felt strange. Lord Reed (son) and Lord Reed (father)- confusion since they were called the same, but if I’m not mistaken, the father would have held the position title not his actual surname following Lord. Whereas the son would be known by the surname. Maybe I’m wrong on this score, but I’ve not really noticed other writers confusing me with the same Lord for father and son. Kate is a companion, she would not have had someone who acted like a maid for her. Also she acted like she had total freedom to go about when and where she wanted to. This was a little odd. She was more like a ward. Otherwise, I really did enjoy the book up until about 2/3 of the way thru when Kate did not immediately reject Lord Reed! Really, she had no interest in him, and nothing would have justified prevaricating and letting him think she was interested in him. Her employers were super nice, there was no real reason to lead the boy on. And taking several pages of internal dialog with herself to justify it before answering him to allow her to think about the offer of courtship rather than saying NO…argh. REALLY! I lost respect for the girl, then I finished reading the story and discovered, basically Lord Reed was done in the story, nothing more comes of his desire to court her! Why even bother with her prevarication if it has nothing to do with the plot even. She should have just told him NO and had a little spice in the conversation. He was so arrogant, the author could have had fun with that. Pretty much the rest of the book bored me. The ending was long and drawn out with detailed wedding shopping, the wedding and then the epilogue. Pretty much boring and sappy. I like conclusions, but better to be concise. I just was scanning it at the end. No story was left. Summary: The story had potential but died a slow death at the end.March 4, 2024

Nice, but not exactly regency.
3 1/2 stars. It was nice to see Emerson get better and fall in love with Kate. However, there were many things that didn’t fit the time period. For example, the lady’s maid would never be the bridesmaid. All the young women (both above and below stairs) acted and spoke like equals. And why would she marry someone because she was afraid of speaking up and offending her employers? And finally, all the inner thoughts were repetitive and became tedious. I have found the writings of this author extremely interesting and enjoyable. It never entices me to go looking for it, I just add the authors name to my list of not to buy their books. This was a very sweet and old fashioned story about a Duke’s daughter who fell on hard times and made her own way as a paid companion. This is the beginning of Kate showing Emerson that his scars aren’t hideous but heroic and with compassion and mercy shows him who he really is under all the pain. This was a beautifully written love story about two people who did not think they would every find love and were willing to settle for a life alone but fate had a different idea. The scars from the fire does not scare her, but intrigued with him she tries to start a conversation. He rebuffs her but he is intrigued since she did not stare at him in horror. He has become a recluse and ignores those that live around him. He doesn’t understand that Kate looks upon him differently. Then Kate is set upon a Viscount that claims to want her as a wife. I really loved this book! Both characters had a hard life and challenges that they had to overcome from their past to move on to a brighter future. Kate is a companion to an elderly couple who show her great affection but before she was a lady who’s father left her in debt when he passed. Emerson became the Duke of Edendale after a fire brought the death of his mother and older brother. He has scars inside and outside for the last two years and pushed everyone away. This is a sweet book with a variety of characters. The heroine’s employers are very sweet and want what is best for her, even is they push their boring, obnoxious nephew at her for a time. The hero is dealing with survivor remorse and feels he shouldn’t be alive. They meet by accident and have an immediate attraction, but the hero is afraid to hope that he is appealing to anyone. While out walking his dogs he run into a beautiful young woman who apparently is lost. He becomes angry that she dares to trespass on his property. She runs off but not from his thoughts. Great characters, intriguing plot. Definitely a must read!January 15, 2023

Breathtaking Love Story! A Must Read!
I have been disappointed with this author’s books at times. However, this book has redeemed Martha Barwood completely! The scarred duke’s pain and self-isolation was poignantly written about. Emerson’s accidental meeting with Kate was enchanting and humorous too. The bond between Emerson and his dogs was very endearing. Bob, the duke’s friend, came back into his life like a whirlwind, showing that friendship and love have a transformative, healing effect. The love story between Kate and Emerson unfolded beautifully. I loved the servants and Kate’s employers. This book had so many lovable characters! A must read! I look forward to more fantastic books like this from this author in the future!January 15, 2023

Good Story.
