The Black Sheep of the Season: A Historical Regency Romance Book (Trials of Love 2)

Courtney has always been the black sheep of her family. Her appearance made her feel invisible during the last two Seasons. Now, in her third Season, all eyes are on her sister, the Diamond of the Season, even the eyes of the Marquess of Lynington… or maybe not?

Lady Courtney Everly is set to attend her third Season. She is short, plump, and does not fit the standards of perfection set by High Society. Courtney has already accepted that she’ll end up a spinster for the rest of her life. The Season starts off on a high note as Courtney’s younger sister Olivia is deemed the diamond of the Season. Courtney fades into the background as her mother dotes on Olivia. But things change when the dashingly handsome Marquess of Lyningdale comes to her aid at a soiree. Courtney can’t help falling for her knight in shining armor, but there’s a problem. . . he’s taken an interest in Olivia.

Lucas Northington—The Marquess of Lyningdale— has returned to London after spending the last five years away on the Grand Tour. Lucas’s father wishes for him to take over several of his ducal responsibilities. Lucas is then put on the spot when his father suggests a marriage between him and the diamond of the Season. Lucas hasn’t given much thought to marriage but agrees to get to know Olivia. But matters take an unexpected turn when he starts enjoying Courtney’s company more so than Olivia’s.

Will Lucas and Courtney eventually give in to their true feelings for each other when so many obstacles are stacked against them?

The Black Sheep of the Season is a unique historical romance novel that you are going to love it. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a happily ever after full of romance.

    Research

While the story line and characters are mostly interesting and enjoyable, I am appalled at the lack of historical research. Is this supposed to be Regency or Victorian? Oscar Wilde could not possibly be the favorite author of a Regency era gentleman, nor was Jane Austen known as the author of her books until a later period. Much of the dialogue is highly anachronistic and what technology business existed at this time? Please keep your eras somewhat realistic. Simple errors like these indicate a lack of respect for your readers, and perhaps your own talents.

The story of Courtney and Lucas.

It’s about a noble woman named Courtney who is short and plump. Her sister Olivia was obsessed with Lucas bec he would be a Duke in the future. Lucas’ father wanted him to marry Olivia because she was beautiful. Lucas was not attracted to her bec she was shallow and talked nonstop about herself. He tried to do what his father wanted by spending time with Olivia, but every time, he was attracted to Courtney’s intelligence & sweet spirit. Courtney was attracted to Lucas also. Their feelings grew. I hated the way everyone but Lucas treated Courtney. I loved that Lucas was more attracted to Courtney. This book a great ending.

    Slow burn

I was amazed at how long it took Lucas to disengage from Olivia. They had nothing in common. I felt bad for Courtney. Everyone was awful to her. Her family was terrible. It took way to long for Lucas to admit his care for her. I am glad they eventually got together. I am also glad her family eventually began to treat her kindly.

The story was very engaging. I loved how Lucas and Courtney interacted. My only negative (I almost gave this a 4 stars but the first 90 % was so good I went with 4.5 stars) was that everything with both sets of parents at the end was wrapped up so easily and so sugar sacherine sweet that it was very unbelievable. It was of course a very happy ending…just so uncharacteristic for all of them that it was a bit hard to read.

It’s difficult to imagine parents favoring one child over another, and the consequences of such an action can be devastating for the child. Courtney has always lived with such abuse because of her body shape and considers herself a spinster. But then she meets someone with a different attitude.

    Great Stor

I loved this story. It’s unfortunate that families do act like they did in this story toward Lady Courtney. Instead of supporting her they ridiculed her and allow others to do the same, at times helping them to make her feel shame. But your story shows how it is not always the way you look on the outside that makes someone love you but what’s on the inside that shows who you truly are. The Diamond of the Season was beautiful (who also happened to be Courtney’s younger sister Olivia) but did not have a good heart and never would have believed that the the Marques’s would be falling in love with the sister she hated, ridiculed and always embarrassing as often as she could, would not fall in love with her (Olivia). But life can be funny sometimes and the person (Lady Courtney) was resigned to becoming a Spinster met a member of the Ton (Lord Lucas) who saved her form a drunken Earl (Lord Molesford) who was looking for a wife to be forced in to marry him so he can gain and heir, and apparently Lady Courtney was introduced to him by her mother who also saw her as an embarrassment to the family and didn’t care how it made Lady Courtney recoil from his advances. But because of that situation she met the man of her dreams who happen to be the one to court her sister Lady Olivia (The Diamond of The Season). But it was at that point they both fell in love and didn’t know the other one felt the same way. But I don’t want to tell the entire story, but I will leave you with this and they lived happily ever after.

    What can I say?

The writing is abysmally bad. It reminds me of The Young Visitors but that author was only ten or eleven. Are you sure an adult is writing these books? To write a Regency romance where the favorite author of the hero won’t be born for another 40 years. To have no understanding of the nobility’s attitudes to trade and to servants. To use words like “flaky”. To use phrases like “ How goes it?” and “It sure is.” To have a character actually change his name halfway through the book. The plot is not that bad but the execution is just awful.

not an awful book. but not great either.

The author desperately needs a good editor. I doubt the term “flaky” in reference to anything other than pastry was used in the 1800s as were many terms used. The frequent pity parties of the h became tiring. As did the hatefulness and lack of dimension of everyone other than 3 characters. The story wasn’t bad but I almost didn’t finish. Grammatical and spelling errors on nearly every page became daunting.

Shallow and filled with self pity

No spoilers. I love reading books about full figured women, but when they’re done poorly it’s just painful. When a book about a full figured woman is done correctly, the heroine loves herself and her body even while realizing others may not feel the same. And the hero loves her because of her body, not despite it. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. The heroine in this book is constantly ridiculed and neglected. Her internal monologue is just a broken record of self pity. She has zero depth and barely ever speaks. The whole book is written at a grade school level and I felt embarrassed reading it. So save yourself the time and skip this one. It’s shallow with a nonexistent plot and probably could have been written in 70 pages instead of 200.

What a picture was painted of a family who relegated one daughter to the shadows because she wasn’t built like the others. Save for the fact that she’s not a stepchild, it’s a cinderella type story. Her parents and sisters ignore her, their friends are cruel to her. I was appalled when her own mother pushed a drunk on her as a possible suitor, someone no one would let near their daughter. Couldn’t put it down, had to make sure Lucas chose the right sister.

Growing up with a plump appearance, Courtney was usually ignored in favor of her beautiful younger sister, Olivia. Fortunately, she had an aunt and uncle who gave her warmth, affection, and a loving relationship. When she meets Lucas at a dance, they both connect in conversation. She was disappointed to find his parents and her parents wanted Lucas and Olivia to marry. As their friendship grew, Lucas felt a strong attraction and hoped to find a way to politely choose his own wife. Regency tradition of parents matching their children to mates conflicted with love. The resolution of this problem creates a precious proposal.

Absolutey terrible on so many levels…..

Thank heavens that this was an Unlimited book for me and not one I bought outright. It was truly dreadful in so many ways. Decent grammar. Decent writing. Characters were never real – no charisma. The book had a interesting premise that could have been well done. The main character was embarrassingly downtrodden and pitiful to such an extreme she was unlikable. The slang language (she was a flake) was so woefully incorrect for the period. Clothing was wrong, details were in correct (Oscar Wilde? come on). I feel the author who clearly has some skills should be embarrassed by this book. Never again.

    Not What I Expected..

First, the premise of the book is entertaining. The writing is grammatically correct. The characters relatable. However, the author and the presumable editor know nothing about the Regency period. The clothing is wrong. The aristocracy lived in London during the London Season–they did not commute from their country estates. Unchaperoned young ladies did not travel in closed carriages with eligible gentlemen. Aristocrats did not engage in business, that was the responsibility of the Cits in the City or one of the ports or the mill owners, not the landed gentry. Finally, Oscar Wilde was not the favorite author of anyone in the Regency period–he was born in the Victorian era. I did finish, but not sure why.

The author needs to do more research.

I usually enjoy this author but she missed the boat on this one. Between dressing the men in ‘suits’ of matching jackets & pants (not a thing until mid-century), the hero enjoying the works of Oscar Wilde (born 1854), and the use of the word ‘plastic’ numerous times (1st introduced in 1925), I was confused about the time period the story took place in. I expect a little more accuracy in historical fiction. There are numerous editing errors with the letter ‘E’ capitalized in the middle of words many times. All in all, I was disappointed in this book.

Good story but problems kept taking me out of the story

The story itself is sound and I appreciate that the heroine is not a traditional beauty, but that said, giving the characters modern-usage names like Courtney and Dylan which were never used in the Regency period forces the reader out of the story when trying to immerse yourself in it because they are anachronistic. Also, the editing of the book needed to be better as there are random capital letters in the middle of words which are distracting. Give this author a copy of Debrett’s and a good editing software and her talent would shine so much brighter.

    Inaccurate historical accuracy

I was really disappointed in this book, starting with the blatant historical inaccuracies, such as descriptions of the men’s clothing and the naming of the protagonist’s favorite writer as Oscar Wilde – who wouldn’t be born for 60 more years! I grew up reading Regency romances, which were more accurate to the era, so the author’s lack of research really bothered me. The use of modern language in conversations could be overlooked, but so many other things were off. I had read another of this author’s books and had similar issues, but wanted to give it another chance. I will not be giving a third chance.

Sally Forbes … The Black Sheep of the Season: A Historical Regency Romance Book

I enjoyed reading this book as I do all of Sally Forbes’ writing. But this was not her best. The h was certainly abused emotionally and denied her family’s support even though she carried on bravely. Even so, she got herself into serious trouble from which the H had no problem rescuing her for the HEA ending.

The black sheep of the family

Courtney Every was concidered the black sheep of the season. She was a lovely girl who never was good enough for her parents and siblings. They invited her like she didn’t exist. Her youngest sister was snobish and thought she was the prettiest . I loved the story and recommend reading this book. Lucas Northington is back in town and his father wants him to find a wife. Who will he choose. I received an ARC of this book and it was very entertaining.

The Black Sheep of the Season is a delightful read from a new Author to me.

Three Sisters, one is married and lives away, the middle daughter, Courtney, is not considered beautiful and is barely tolerated by her family, the youngest Olivia is a beauty to look at but her status has obliterated her senses and has gone to her head. Olivia is all about Olivia, her wants, desires and dreams. The Mom has the maturity of her youngest and status is everything. The Dad just follows Moms lead and caters to the youngest, Olivia to appease his wife and go with the flow. Courtney must attend the social functions of the Season, and endure snubs from family and Olivias snobby friends. I don’t want to spoil a great read but this book is filled with chatter, tears, romance, dresses, carriage rides, Earls, Dukes, Countesses, picnics, teas, romance, hurts and heartaches, laughter, and family. We all know how family can be.

    Regency romance and intrigue

I thoroughly enjoyed this Regency romance with great characters, romance and intrigue. She was the middle daughter and was short and heavier and never had a beau and planned to be a spinster. It was the debut season for her younger sister and she had been announced the diamond of the season, but was very shallow and only thought of herself. Lucas was a Marquees called home from his world tour to find a wife. He met her when he saved her from a drunk, but ended up seeing her sister. There was a lot of intrigue, but the ending was great and I enjoyed the Epilogues. It was terrible how they all treated her, but she end up well. I voluntarily reviewed an advance review copy.

    Enjoyable book

So sad that Courtney parent’s take the side of The Diamond of the Season and forget that the other daughters have feelings also. Sad to think some parents still feel this way. The same was for Lucas as his father wants him to marry the Diamond. Neither parents realize how both of their children really feel. A real man doesn’t look at what the like but what they are made of. Really enjoyed this book, hope more people will read and learn that looks are only skin deep. Would recommend this book to others. Really a good book to read.

    Black Sheep Spinster

Lady Courtney Everly is the black sheep in her family because of her outward appearance of height and weight. After two seasons of nothing from society except ridicule, she is considered to be a spinster. Now her younger sister, Olivia is having her first season and named the Diamond of the Season. Yet again all eyes are on her sister to praise, including her family, and Courtney only gets their ridicule. Until Lucas Northington, Marquess of Lynington, who has returned from a tour of the continent, comes to her rescue. Can he see more than just her appearance? Or is he only being kind because he wants to court Courtney’s sister?

The Real Diamond of the Season

From beginning to end, this book was hard to put down! Courtney was the true diamond of the season by far and thankfully, Lucas sensed this quickly. Courtney’s diamond sister became so wrapped up in herself that she even became cruel to the servants. It was sad how Courtney’s family disregarded her very existence. Thankfully, Lucas realized just how beautiful she was and fell in love with her, much to the shock of Courtney’s family and his own. I loved the added bonus of the love that blossomed between Courtney’s spinster friend, Jessica and Lucas’ brother. That was something I had been hoping for! Sally Forbes delivered yet another fantastic novel!

    Good

I really enjoyed this book. Lord Lucas and Lady Courtney are such great characters and the way they fell for each other was sweet if not very emotional. Courtney was not treated well by her family because she was not the tons image of the perfect lady. She had little confidence in herself until she let her guard down and allowed herself to shine. Lucas was meant for Courtney’s sister Olivia, but she can dream of a possible future. Lucas has a choice to make the perfect tons pick or a happy future with his perfect pick?

    ARC review

My heart broke for the the cruelty the heroine endured at the hands of her family (!) and the ton. She was seen by so very few. It is sweet how the H sees her from their meeting. Personally I would have liked the H to be a bit more decisive about things (but the book would have been shorter LOL). Overall a very good story but … there were a lot of typos throughout (the most repetitive being the not being capitalized at the beginning of a sentence.

    A very Sweet Story

It is sad when a young woman is perceived as being unattractive and ignored by her family and most others of the culture who appear to favor other daughters who are attractive. However, it can cause a young woman to develop a humble, considerate and empathetic nature, making her truly beautiful. It is a lovely story. With an almost too good of an ending.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Courtney is a young woman who does not meet the ton’s idea of beauty. As a result, she has had two unsuccessful seasons and is the frequent object of ridicule, particularly from her younger sister. Olivia has just had her debut and been named Diamond of the season. Lucas is a future duke who has just returned from his Grand Tour. While the ton are trying to pair up the most eligible bachelor with the diamond, he finds her to be shallow, self-centered, and boring. Instead, he is drawn to her delightfully curvy and intelligent older sister. Will he succumb to peer pressure, or follow his heart? Read it and see. I received an ARC copy of this book for review.

    Sweet And happy end

This was a nice easy and quick read with a feel good feeling after you finish it. Lucas can’t help but feel drawn to her kind yet timid personality and in the end realizes it’s only her that will make a happy in a marriage. The story focused on how it is what a person is like on the inside that ultimately stirs the deep affection and love.

    Ugly duckling

This book did make my blood boil as I read how the parents emotionally abused their middle daughter, the heroine, and also how the hero’s family just assumed he would prefer the diamond of the season. I am not sure how the heroine’s mother recognized her fault in all this so quickly, but the story had to have a HEA. The heroine was very likable as she wasn’t the perfect beauty on the outside, but definitely was on the inside. The hero stood up for what he wanted in the end, even though he let others think he was going along with them. It was a good read.
