Paying Off a Debt
This book did not seem quite as long and detailed as other books by this author. However, it was still interesting to read about life in this time period. As is the norm with the author, a strong woman is the main character; a woman who has not found a marriage during her first seqason. As it is important in society to show one’s wealth through clothing, food, balls attended, etc., Marina’s family was struggling due to poor business deals of her father. The entire goal of coming out during the season was for a young woman to find a marriage to a wealthy man, usually much older than she. Marina finds herself ready to marry a disgusting man but then reconsiders that when she realizes she could save her family even though this would result in a loveless marriage. Manny marriages are loveless in this time period but many develop into good relationships. Again, I enjoyed the story but it just did not seem quite as developed as other books books by the author.October 1, 2024

A very good story, until the end
This story was excellent, with a great storyline and well formed characters. It was hard to put it down. Then the last scene of the story came to its unfinished ending, leaving you hanging unless you pressed the link for the extended epilogue, requiring you to enter your first name and email address before being able to access the ending. It is a cheap marketing trick that I abhor. Being an excellent storyteller, the author should not have to resort to such an annoying tactic to validate their self-worth to see if the reader wants more from them. I hope to see this practice end soon by this author and the many others who share this irritating action.September 19, 2024

So many issues with this book, from minor editing errors to characterization and plot. Character points developed at the outset are dropped, and new fundamental ones are introduced halfway through. To help the family avoid poverty, Marina agrees to the arrangement her father has made. A rich old man is to pay the debts her father’s gambling has caused. Yet while that man is on a business trip, a moneylender confronts her father for his largest debt. Marina actually proposes to him. Since he is a very handsome Duke, she feels she could better endure a life with him. Adam is surprisingly cooperative since he is unpopular in society but needs a bride. Their mutual needs are met. Yet immediately she finds his life is dominated by work. There is an awkward relationship which is punctuated by a few gaps in the story that need proofreading. A tenderness develops between them. When her sister sends tragic news of her family, Marina rushes off with her lady’s maid because she feels the Duke is too busy to be interested in helping. She was wrong. What follows made it worth reading all the way to the end. Adam and Marina are engaging characters.February 11, 2024

Couldn’t finish.
In the prologue, the rich (she writes about how opulent his room is) old Duke is dying, and his 18 year old son / heir is with him. The author writes about how the dying Duke didn’t mourn his wife / son’s mother. Ok. Some people don’t mourn the death of others. (That was page 7 I believe.) Then, in the first chapter, which takes place 10 years later, the current Duke (the son from the prologue) is now a money lender. Not a likely profession for a wealthy Duke, but ok. I’ll go with it, it might be important for the plot. But then (on page 15 I believe), the current Duke’s mother (the one whose death was mentioned on page 7) shows up. That’s where I stopped reading, because either his ghost of a mother is showing up and slamming doors (too farcical for me right now), or there’s such major inconsistencies in the writing that the author doesn’t even remember who she killed off (with such poor editing that the editor missed this). This might have been a good story, and maybe with some serious editing / repairs to the plot inconsistencies, it might become one. But right now, it’s not for me.February 1, 2024

To what extent will a young women go to, to save her father and family?
Marina, her mother, and sister have no idea the trouble her father has gotten into. They are financially ruined and he owes a large amount of money to a ruthless duke, who is a moneylender. Marina wants to save her dad, so looks for a marriage to a horrid older gentleman for him to pay of the debt. But before that happens she meets the duke her father owes the money to and instead offers to marry him for the debt to be repaid. He needs a wife, although he really doesn’t want one. Will he accept, what will happen to Marina and her family. This was an excellent book, I read it in 2 days. I recommend it and hope you will get it too.October 5, 2023

This was an excellent story about a young woman who pays who father’s debts by marrying the man who bought them. The Duke Marianna married is very cold, because that’s what his father, the previous Duke taught him to be. Adam is entranced by Marianna, but is afraid to let his heart have it’s way. This is a pretty solid story with decent characters and I was pretty excited to see how it all ends. Then, I reach the end of the book, and the story is incomplete. I hate the practice of locking book content behind mailing lists, like some sort of add-on. But, if it is done, lock the actual extended epilogue behind the mailing list, not the last chapter. A Very Shy Duke
If you want a lot of interaction between the two main characters this is not the book for you. Adam had coldness ingrained into him by his father and struggles with this throughout the book. His mother, Evelyn, is a positive influence on him now that his father has passed away and her friendship with his new wife, Marina, is heartwarming. It’s a bit confusing whether Evelyn is Adam’s biological mother or not. The prologue states Adam’s father did not mourn for his wife at all and Evelyn is not in the chapter at all. Then, suddenly Evelyn is in the story and she is the Dowager Duchess and Adam refers to her as his mother. Evelyn speaks to Adam about how she was in love with his father once and no other woman was mentioned as his wife before Evelyn. It just seemed confusing to me. Also, Adam spent 3/4 of the novel hiding from Marina. When the novel really got good, it ended too quickly for me. A wonderful novel but I think there should have been more interactions between Marina and Adam in at least the second 1/2 of the novel. The ending was excellent.May 17, 2023

I enjoyed this book very much. Dorothy was able to combine different types of people and the problems they have that challenge their lives. I loved Marina and thought she was an inspiration to others even when she didn’t know what the future held. Adam’s character made the biggest change in the book with strong and loving women not giving up on him. I always like when a terrible person gets their comeuppance like Lord Ellerby did, and hopefully Marina’s sister Josephine will have her story in another book. I think maybe we could also learn a bit more about the happily ever after for Adam and Marina and how he handles his change of heart regarding his money business. I loved this book. It’s the story of Adam and Marina. Marina’s father is in debt to the Duke. The Duke was planning on sending him to prison. His daughter suggests Adam marry her to have an heir and to write off her father’s debt. Adam had a horrible temper like his father taught him, but how are you going to have a baby if you don’t get close to your wife? After several attempts to talk and get along, Adam is mean to her. Anytime they might look like their getting closer, Adam ruins it by an anger outburst. But finally, he starts apologizing after his outbursts. This, of course, made them closer. I didn’t like Adam’s outburst bec that really can hurt a persons self-esteem. I liked that a person can be forgiven if they try to improve. Just like when we apologize, God forgives us. Well written, fast paced reading, full of drama, intrigue, romance, love and mystery. All the characters are well defined and fit this book. Marina is aware that her father has run up a lot of debts and needs to help him not go to prison. She offers herself into marriage with Adam, who accepts for his own reasons. Dorothy Sheldon has been writing for several years and this book in the Regency Expedient Marriages series comes across like this is her first ever published piece. There are some inconsistencies in the plot. I had to reread a few passages to make sure I understood what was going on. Even after rereading the passages, I was still confused. Additionally, Sheldon switches between referring to characters with one name and then calling them a different name. I had to make a cheat sheet to keep track of the characters. Granted, while there were some structural challenges, the book does take a positive turn around Chapter 6. At this point, I was hooked and had to know how it ended. For this, I commend Sheldon for writing some engaging scenes. These engaging scenes were redemption points for what started as a sub-par reading experience.
