The Beast of Lindenhall Estate: A Historical Regency Romance Book (Deals of Marriage 5)

She was an adventurous lady. He was a beast who loved music but hasn’t played since her mother’s death because music evokes painful memories of loss… When fate forces them together, will their melody strike the perfect chord?

Lady Cassandra Grantham longs to escape the stuffy constraints of London’s high society. Her free spirit yearns to explore life’s adventures unencumbered by societal expectations. But a twist of misfortune leaves her reputation at risk and bound to the notorious Beast of Lindenhall in a hasty union.

Malcom Locksley, The Duke of Lindenhall, buries his grief behind a stoic facade after inheriting his title under grim circumstances. Haunted by past demons, he retreats from society’s scrutiny to his country estate. But duty soon compels him back to London’s glitzy ballrooms, where a fleeting encounter with an unconventional lady ensnares him in scandalous gossip.

Thrust together by circumstance, Cassandra sets out to uncover more lies beneath her new husband’s brooding exterior than London society suspects. As she gently chips away at his staunch barriers, she discovers a creative soul still yearns to sing its melody despite past pain. Their unlikely bond deepens through their shared love of music. But when harmony seems within reach, their fragile trust faces a jarring note that threatens to shatter everything.

Will this Beauty finally see beyond her mysterious Beast’s stoic façade? Can two lost souls discover that their imperfect melodies, when united, strike that elusive perfect chord?

    Excellent.

Such a good story I did enjoy it. The only thing that seems strange to me is why he was call The Beast, that would imply he had done something terrible which people were aware of. The fact that he was antisocial does not make him a beast.

    Fairly Good Read

The story overall was pretty good. I would have given it at least 4 stars if it wasn’t for the missed spelled words and the wrong words put in a few sentences. Getting towards the end the story got too wordy and the descriptions became an overkill.

    Very good reading

except for the typos! I fail to understand why, with all the well educated avid readers out here, that authors find themselves unable to have decent proofreaders! Still worth reading though.

This is a sweet regency period story

Despite being a very sweet story that takes place during the regency period, the author apparently did not have time to edit her writing. She also uses contemporary American slang, “ the Ton is a gigantic pain,” which is not appropriate language for the regency period. There were a number of misspelled words, as well as grammatical errors , such as “ Mama offered Maggie and I a choice.” Correct grammar would be “ offered Maggie and ME a choice.” There are several errors using the subject pronoun in place of the object pronoun. However, I enjoyed the story line very much, and hope the author will take the extra time to perfect her writing in the future.

    Clean lovely romance

Malcolm is known as a beast and has lived remote and alone for several years. Cassandra has always been a bit on the wild side until one night it lands her in trouble. Can she ever break the ice around the Beast’s heart? A sweet, endearing story of finding true love.

    I’m a little confused

I got this book because of the blurb line hasn’t played since her mother’s death. It should have read hasn’t played since HIS mother’s death. I enjoyed the book after I got into it enough to realize that her was really his in the blurb. In fact I’m going to try another of her books. I would have given 5 stars but they never changed that line in the blurb or advertising.

    Felt Rushed

I didn’t like this one as well as I liked the previous one that I read. This one felt rushed. There were a lot of typos & formatting errors which made it distracting to read. Also I felt like the transitions from scene to scene were just missing or half done. Ex) He’s in his room preparing for dinner & then the next paragraph he is in magically in the dinning room. They could easily been fixed with just a sentence or two. Towards the end I started skipping sections just to find out what happened instead of enjoying the reading because it just felt chopping & incomplete. Hopefully this one will be revisited & corrections will be made. Otherwise it was your classic Beauty & the Beast storyline.

    An Adequate Performance

This isn’t a good book nor it is a bad one. It’s middling. The gist is that Malcom, the so-called Beast of Lindenhall, blames himself for the death of parents and has punished himself for six years, becoming a recluse after being a real life of the party type. His cousin guilts him into coming to a party and unwittingly gets tangled up with Cassandra, the daughter of a marquess. A marriage to preserve honor takes place three days later and now these two, that resent one another, now find themselves bound together unwillingly. A setup like this is not unusual in this genre and is not what I take issue with. My main issue is that Malcom is not a beast, but rather a kind man unable to cope with grief and guilt, and that I actually agreed with him when everyone else told him he was wrong. I think what was missing context on why his cousins wanted him to return to a semblance of his former self. Maybe that was in the prequel chapter that some of these authors are doing now. I don’t know – I’m not signing up for a mailing list to read something that should be in the book. Anyway, without that context, his cousins came off as well meaning but heavy handed and a touch cruel. Perhaps if the early chapters talked about his life and relationships shortly after the death of his parents, I would be more empathic to the cousins’ desire to see him happy and content once again. As it stands, I have to infer more than I would like to understand these characters. I truly wished that when he was planning to leave town following the scandalous embrace he would have followed through, to say Watch me. when his cousin told him that he must marry Cassandra. I wanted him to play more into the beast moniker he was given, since it is the name of the book. He is simply too nice, even for a sweet, clean romance novel. Cassandra herself is fine. She is a heroine you typically find in these stories and she gets the job done. Her chemistry with Malcom felt forced to me, so I didn’t fully buy into it. There were several sections like over the next three weeks we became closer, which doesn’t tell me much. I think you can use those sorts of phrases if you write a story that takes place over the course of years or a lifetime, but in a story that takes place over the course of two months? That didn’t really work for me. As stated at the top, this book is middling. Everything about it is okay and that’s about it. There are worst ways to spend an afternoon, but there are much better ones as well. The previous book in this series, A Convincing Arrangement with a Brute, is proof of that. Martha’s books are always something of a tossup for me. Some I quite like, some I find so dull that I drop, and others like this one don’t leave much of an impact but are just compelling enough to finish. Here’s hoping that her next book falls in the first category once again.

    Great read!

Lady Cassandra lived in the shadow of her talented younger sister, Margaret. Cassandra loved to sing but her parents didn’t consider that a talent, everybody can sing. Her sister was to have her coming out at tonight’s ball. Everything was going along well so Cassandra decided to get a little air. While out side she felt free and began to run as the Duke of Lindenhall stepped out in front of her. To make matters worse they are seen holding on to each other. Scandal! This is a good love story with a few ups and downs. The characters are very engaging and real. This book, is definitely worth reading.

    Music healed his heart

A misunderstanding leads to a marriage between strangers in order to save the lady’s reputation. After that the book became somewhat monotonous because Cassandra and Malcolm rarely interacted or even saw each other. About halfway into the book, Cassandra and Malcolm finally realize they share a love of music. She sings beautifully and her husband plays the piano amazingly well. They seem to be getting on well but Malcolm keeps retreating back into himself out of feelings of guilt about what happened to his parents. The lack of meaningful conversation between the couple was very frustrating. The ending seemed a bit rushed. A good novel but the story could have flowed better than it did.

Sometimes it is very hard to be ‘seen’ when someone else close to you has all the attention. Sometimes grief unexpressed takes an unhealthy turn. Sometimes unexpected ‘difficulties’ turn out to be magical. I would recommend this story for anyone who would enjoy these ‘sometimes’…

We have Cassandra who is the older sister who lives in the shadow of her younger sister and Malcom who lives in the shadow of his parents’ deaths. Cassandra bumped into Malcom while outside in the gardens and were accidentally found by her mother and his aunt. Malcom is not only accused of murdering his parents but is now accused of ruining Cassandra. The stage is set to see if these two can reach their HEA. This is a great book. Sweet Clean Romance

Another wonderful addition to the Deals of Marriage series by Martha Barwood (Note: These are all stand alone books so you don’t have to read them in order as the characters don’t overlap.) In this book, the hero Malcom has become a recluse and has taken to hiding himself after the death of his parents. Our heroine Cassandra is a young impulsive lady who accidentally puts herself in a compromising position with Malcolm forcing them to get married. This story is how they slowly go from barely speaking to each other to bonding over their shared love of music and find their Happily Ever After. Excellent character development, beautifully written dialogue. Enjoyed how the book shows both of the main characters point of view. Highly recommend! Clean – kissing only. I received a free Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC) of this book but was given no monetary compensation. I read for the enjoyment and voluntarily reviewed.
