It didn’t have a complete ending. You had them married but what did the father do when he finds out. Does he give her the dowry or the contract was binding. Does her mother go back to live with the father or stay with them.April 11, 2025

An Intriguing Story
I liked the characters and the plot. So many things have gone wrong from both sides of the families of Anne (a very selfish, harsh father) and Lord Denfield’s wayward brother, there was could have been so many bad things that could have happened to the bride and groom. I was really expecting the father to cause more problems, but that didn’t happen. However, what the brother did was worse. You will need to read the book to find out.April 20, 2024

Love Comes With Trouble
Anne lacks self-confidence and suffers from low self-esteem, due to berating by her father. He has no intentions of her attending another season saying she cannot appeal to a gentleman. Her aunt however challenged him to let her take her to London for a season and made it a bet so he could not turn it down. At her first ball she has an incident with Lord Henley being intoxicated when his brother Peter, Earl of Denfield stepped in. Peter unfortunately is always keeping his brother out of trouble, and it is getting out of hand. One night his intoxication went too far to scandalize Anne and Peter offered marriage to Anne so as not to ruin her reputation. When Peter decided enough was enough and was not going to be at his brother’s beck and call, the brother decided this was not going to happen. And he was going to do something about it. To be practical is one thing but to be loved is quite another!
I loved this story! I am thankful that Sally Forbes has stayed true to her time period pieces, and squeaky cleanliness; while still adding in new elements and new story lines! This is a story of Anne, who has resigned herself as a spinster ( with her fathers encouragement..) only to be taken to London for one last season by her Aunt. Her Aunt and Father make a deal on poor Anne’s life… In comes our hero as well as the real villain of the story (though her father is a close second). The rest of the story continues on through the London season as Anne has several very close and sometimes even terrifying encounters with the villain of the story. All the while our hero, goes above and beyond in his genuineness, kindness, moral reproach, and own personal desire to keep Anne safe. wonderful story! My favorite line Emotion and affection is important to me. I should like to have some sort of feeling for my husband and I should very much like him to feel the same for me. To be practical is one thing but to be loved is quite another!March 29, 2024

A good read
My only criticism would be that the title doesn’t really fit the story. I didn’t think the earl was particularly arrogant. He was certainly stressed by his brother’s bad behavior, but that didn’t make him arrogant. This story was very enjoyable. The characters were well fleshed out. A little of the dialogue was overly wordy, but that might have been a stylistic choice. As usual, Ms. Forbes seems to love the word “mayhaps”. I still enjoyed this book.March 29, 2024

Clean Regency Romance
PETER! Oh, how I loved Peter. This book weaves a story filled with intrigue and romance. Forbes invites us to dive into a world of Victorian and Regency times. I felt like I was in the ballrooms with Peter and Anne. It was sweet to follow along as the two fell in love. Anne is a lovely female main character who lacks the confidence that her sisters had in finding their matches. She is nearing the age of spinsterhood according to her father. He is the worst by the way. Peter is an Earl who is just trying to keep his brother out of trouble. He’s also trying to avoid marriage. As they are thrown together by Peter’s brother’s reckless behavior it is clear from the start that this book is going to be a wild ride. In fact, it is not your typical love story there happens to be an extra element of surprise that adds adventure and danger. I could not put this book down. Definitely one of Sally Forbes’ best books!
Peter discovered what he thought he wanted in a wife was very different from what he truly wanted and needed. Anne was a shy wallflower, belittled constantly by her father. Anne’s aunt was a delightful character that thankfully came to her rescue. Meanwhile, Peter’s brother was an uncaring alcoholic with a gambling habit. He proved to be more dangerous than anyone would have thought when he didn’t get his way . . . . With the help of her aunt and Peter, Anne blossomed. This is a heartwarming, exciting romance novel that is not to be missed!March 28, 2024

Peter and Anne’s story is so sweet!
Anne is running out of time to find a husband. Her father has decided she is done searching and will be a spinster from here on out. But her Aunt comes to her rescue and makes a bet that she can marry her off this wedding season. It was a risky bet, but it all pays off when Anne has an unfortunate run in with Lord Henley. Lord Henley is pure trouble and each time he has met with Anne, its been unfortunate. But the last run in risked costing Anne her reputation and chance for marriage. Peter , his brother Lord Denfield, takes it upon himself to agree to marry Anne, to save her reputation. The arrangement was only ever meant as just an arrangement, void of feelings. But as time goes on they both find, the person they are to marry is rather wonderful indeed. But just as things seem to be looking up… Lord Henley plots revenge over the new arrangement. And his revenge could risk Peter and Anne not being able to marry! It was a wonderful story, slow romance, but sweet all the same and lots of drama and suspense mixed in.March 28, 2024

Great book
Extremely well written, full of drama, love, twists, villain, action, emotions, growth, family issues with a happily ever after. Anna is the daughter who has been put down by her father over a very long time. Thanks to her Aunt who helps her. Peter has been dealing with his brother over the years with all the issues he has. Together they meet and will have to work together , as they do they grow and have great happenings. This story has some unanswered questions about some of the characters, so hopefully there will be another in this possible series. Would recommend to others. This is a wonderful story for Anne and Peter.
Anne was extremely shy. She had had three seasons in London. Anne’s father, who was not supportive, constantly put her down and didn’t want Anne to marry, so she could take care of him. Anne’s Aunt was a sweet aunt who wanted to support Anne and assist her in gaining the courage to find a husband for herself. Then comes Lord Henley, an alcoholic who was mean and refused to apologize when he bumped into Anne. His brother, The Earl of Denfield, only wanted to marry someone who fit all his interests w no regard for emotions. But when his brother, Lord Henley, harmed Anne, he felt responsible knowing that sandal within the ton would ruin Anne. Put these characters together, and I found an excellent story w a great ending.March 27, 2024

That is until Lord Henley creates a scene by running into Miss Jennings and injurying her in front of a ballroom of people. Peter feels obligated to apologize and repay for his brothers misdeed, but then he sees he was wrong about marriage, love and Miss Jennings. Will Peter continue to allow his brother to take preference? Or will he let him go and choose to pursue his new view towards Miss Jennings? Miss Anne Jennings has one more season to find a husband away from her father’s influence or she will be have a life as a spinster belittled by him. This book was different ( in a good way) from most regency romances with the twists and turns. It kept me interested that I had to keep reading to the end. Yet events took place that changed everything and suddenly their lives were entwined and filled with deception, evil and more. Nice read
This story is about Anne, who has a difficult family situation with her mother having left her father months earlier and the last of her two sisters married she is now to live alone with her cruel father. Her mother’s aunt persuades her father to have one last season and while and for a brief while things brighter for her. While attending her first ball of the season her foot is injured due to the carelessness of one young man. That situation ends up being the beginning of a few difficult situations she finds herself in. How she first gets hurt, what occurs afterwards and how it all ultimately leads to her hea is revealed in this sweet and clean read. Overall a nice read although an epilogue to kind of tie up some loose ends would have finished it up quite nicely. That’s just my opinion of courseMarch 26, 2024

Very interesting
One’s fisrt impression of Peter is not good as he laughs at his drunk brother falling around. Actually, I think it’s misleading of his character as revealed through the rest of the story. As it turns out, he actually doesn’t think his brothers behaviour is funny in the least! As one gets to know him, you can’t help liking him. I felt sorry for Anne, but admired her wiilingness to listen to her aunt, who is a lovely character. Watching her grow and become more bold was lovely. Peter and Anne’s love also grew over time, something I appreciate in a book. The author made a really big deal about Henley asking for a dance with Anne and then…nothing. No further comment on how it went. Frustrating. There were some unexpected twists and and the villain is dealt with. Not as one would perhaps have liked, but then this is a different situation as it’s family. Beautiful ending but, unfortunately, no closure regarding Anne’s father. Considering how he features in the story some closure that vindicates the heroine in front of him would have been most satisfying. So that was rather disappointing too. Overall it is a good, clean story and for the most part I really enjoyed it.March 26, 2024

Dastardly Lord Henley and the peril he caused added some extra adventure to the book. Great read!
Peter had no time for love yet he knew he would marry someday. He biggest problem at present was his rakish brother who frequently drank too much. He feared his brother would destroy the family good name with a scandal. Anne was constantly belittled by her father who told her no one would want a spinster like her. Then it happened. Peter’s brother caused a scandal by forcing himself on poor Anne. Peter not wanting Anne to be forced to marry his horrible brother proposed and she, not wanting to be ruined, accepted. Much more happens as the plot thickens. Deception, kidnapping, ransom are hints of what’s to come.March 25, 2024
