Lady Average’s Unexpected Admirer: A Historical Regency Romance Novel

She didn’t know how beautiful she was, this girl who called herself “Lady Average”. Everything about her was perfect. A glance from her melting brown eyes soothed his soul, a twitch of her lips was his joy, her laughter was his music. He could not deny the love in his heart for her, but could he ever hope to make her his without revealing his secret and jeopardizing his chosen path?
Piers Wellbelove is the 5th Marquess of Lorne and heir to the Duke of Lelandshire. But he’s rejected rank and fortune to marry medicine instead, planning to treat the poor by opening a free health clinic. That means finding patients who can pay to help those who can’t. Reluctantly, Piers must work for the people he has rejected – the ton. When he attends a certain injured earl’s daughter and begins to fall for her, he faces a dilemma: A lowly physician is not a suitable match for one of her status. Only if he puts his career on the line by revealing his true lineage can he ever hope to make her his.
Athena Crossland is “Lady Average”, the middle one of two beautiful, talented sisters she believes she can never compete with for a gentleman’s attention. Free from parental expectation until her elder sister marries, Athena throws herself into the Season with no thought of romance. Then, an injury brings a young, handsome physician into her life, whose face and touch she can’t forget, and her world is overturned.
How can an earl’s daughter love a mere physician without risking the wrath of Society? When she finds out who the doctor is and how he’s lied to her, it seems like the end of the world. But maybe it’s just the beginning…

Disappointed
Interesting storyline. Unfortunately, the book read like an outline. The chronology was frequently difficult to follow, especially when bouncing among the secondary characters. There was an obvious lack of quality editing. Development of the primary characters was shallow, and the stilted conversation only tended to reinforce their lack of depth. The multiple other couples appeared to be more of a distraction, and their story would be better told in their own book.November 5, 2023

Doctors for the Poor
Thank you Amanda The book was full of love and it had interesting pieces within. The two love stories were a little boring, but in the end, they both achieved their goal.September 15, 2023

Disappointing and stilted
I only got to chapter 4 so cannot say if it is clean or not. As said I stopped during chapter 4. It was not for me. It felt a bit stilted, nothing inspired me. Unusually for me I just could not persevere, which is a shame as the ‘blurb’ had promise and I was looking forward to a storyline that was different to most. Sorry.August 22, 2023

Great First Novel
Amanda Stones is a new author for me. I am impressed with this story. First, there is Athena who was left penniless when her father died. He was a member of the nobility but his family was disgraced by his loss of fortune. Instead of participating in her debut, Athena became a companion. There is, of course, a young doctor that is trying to start a clinic for the poor, where people can get excellent care. He has a secret. Both Athena and Piers know they cannot fall in love. She, because she is employed. Whereas Piers does not want to advertise his identity. Both of the main characters are good people trying to be true to their families and their careers. Some of the secondary characters were memorable. The action was slow but fit the story. I give it 5 stars.July 25, 2023

Overly simplistic writing
The premise of the book was engaging, but I felt as if I was forcing myself to continue reading because I wanted to find out what was going to happen. The writing style was annoying and simple, expressions of feelings almost , canned, in their simple phrasing.July 24, 2023

A very entertaining story of a young lady tripping by falling into the arms of a doctor. His secret oven identity causes heartache and frustration, but love conquers all. Very few errors up the good work and success will be yours, Amanda.July 21, 2023

A Lovely book
This was a lovely book, no exciting plot twist, and turns. Lots of main character titles, is he a Duke or a Marquess? The other characters were more of an afterthought and could have benefited from more depth.July 8, 2023

Love all around.
This was more than one story of love. At times it was hard to keep them straight and separated. Good stories each in their own way but sometimes confusing and overpowering.July 5, 2023

Good Plot
I started this book because the plot( an intelligent, somewhat less than beautiful) was about a woman in regency England who dabbled in engineering. There were numerous errors, the author skipped back and forth between first and third person. The time line was inconsistent at best and the author does not seem to comprehend that the low born of that time period, had a vastly different vocabulary than did the high born. In this novel, the servants spoke with the same tone and used the same vocabulary as did the members of the Earl’s family. I believe she can be a talented writer but needs a better source for proofreading and editing. Just my opinion.July 5, 2023

Tedious.
It was difficult to care about the characters. They all seemed unreal. The conversations were stilted and their attitudes seemed changeable and illogical. I hate to just stop reading, but this book tested my resolve to finish. So, I skipped many pages and just read what happened in the end.July 2, 2023

No one is average.
The heroine is a middle child and feels that she is nothing special. The hero is titled but loves medicine. How they navigate society makes the story. It was a good read.July 2, 2023

Story lacked continuity
The first part of the book was well written and characters likeable. Then suddenly the book seemed to be more of a draft with contradictions that made no sense. Please rework the second part of the text of this book and have some select readers report back to see if the problems have been addressed.June 30, 2023

Good Story
An encouraging story for those who are the middle child; and a sweet story for all. It was fun to follow the journey of this middle child who thought she was nothing special. Athena was content to be on her own, but her life went in a direction she didn’t expect. Well developed characters and a fun story line. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves historical romance.June 26, 2023

Sweet book
Well written, fast paced book. Full of love, drama, romance, intrigue and a great storyline. Piers and Athena meet thru an injury that he is called to come and take care of her. They both notice that his touch stays with them both, their first notice of each other, their first feelings and doubts of them. Athena questions those feelings as Piers is only a doctor not having any rank in society. With both of them having secrets that they need to discover and deal with. Athena finds out that he is not only a doctor bur was a future Duke that he doesn’t want to be. They both will need to deal with these issues before they can have their happily ever after. All characters in this book are well suited to it and could have their own storyline. So curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy this book. Would recommend this book. I am an ARC and leave this unbiased, honest review.June 25, 2023

A great story from a talent author.
I am quickly becoming a fan of this author. This is the second book I have read of hers and I found it both charming and very well written. She had done her all characters in a brilliant manner. This story was so sweet about a doctor (and a lord) and a young woman who see herself as just an average lady nothing special. This is a gem of a tale and one I am so very happy to recommend!June 25, 2023

Sweet Story
Being a middle sister this book really stuck a cord with me. What I found interesting in this story is that it was not just about Piers and Athena but also Lance, Kate and others finding their HEA. These secondary characters were superbly woven in so the reader was engaged in many lives not just the one. Well written, engaging and worth the readJune 24, 2023
