A Cruel Fath
A cruel father sets up his will that his children will only inherit their portions of his vast estate if they marry within a year of the reading of his will. His only daughter, who only longs for freedom, must marry first or her 4 brothers will not receive their inheritance. This leaves Katherine vulnerable to unscrupulous fortune hunters. Bleh! Far too many romance novel’s require the heroine to need a hero. I’d rather read novels about women who are their own hero, who detect narcissist, and outwit them before they are trapped, and need to be rescued. A Woman making the most of her Father’s Will
A father dies. A will is read. For the Willenshire family to receive their inheritance, all the children must marry. For any to receive their inheritance, Lady Katherine must marry first. Lady Katherine must decide whether to marry for title and wealth or for the love of a good man. Either way, Katherine will receive her inheritance, but her father is dead and would never have approved of Timothy, if he were alive. The will states marriage, not wealth or title. I have read 3 of the 4 books. The stories are fantastic. The challenge the 4 children have to face and the pressure they are push to meet are thrilling and intriguing. Very infuriating read!
This story was quite frustrating at times because no one seemed to have a backbone, except perhaps Henry, a minor character. Fabulous Story
I liked how the setting was so different from other books, an ultimatum to marry within a year. The characters were well developed, and even though they didn’t have a good relationship with their father, the story did not overly dwell on it. Not that long–it just felt that way
William was probably the most disappointing of the players. How can he acquire a spine in time for the next in this series? He accepted the suit of the villain without any effort of checking him out. Katherine was only moderately better–the engagement announcement was a failure of better to live a life of misery than a moment of embarrassment. Timothy was a gentle hero who finally stood up. This was a reasonable read, until in chapter 25, Timothy hands a typed page of his book to Katherine. Typing, in the regency? Or it’s possibly very early Victorian, I suppose. Either way, no typewriters. Everything was hand written, other than printed books. Unless it was meant to be a printed page of his book, after publishing, but I think not, as it was a bundle of pages. Compulsive Reading
I was glued to this book from the first page. There are typos, grammatical errors, and a few other mistakes, but in this instance I care not one jot! The wicked terms of their nasty father’s will leaves the 4 siblings in shock. Katherine has the full weight of all their futures on her shoulders. She has a limited amount of time to get married. Her unpleasant mother pushes her to one man, her brothers are all dealing badly with their own feelings, and the terrible knowledge of what her future will be weighs heavily. There is however a possible alternative. Woven through the anxiety and worry is some great discussions about novels. The lives of women and their situation as the property of their husbands, is also a feature throughout the book. Big thumbs up to Dorothy Sheldon for a well nuanced novel. Great start to a new series
This the first in a new series by the author and after finishing this one, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series. Willoughby’s father died in an accident and his will was left with very particular demands in order for Lady Katharine and her three brothers to inherit the family funds. Lady Katharine must marry first and then the brothers must marry as well in order to receive their inheritance. This puts a lot of pressure on Lady Katherine along with her brothers. It also must be done in a quick time. Lady Katherine begins her third Season knowing she must find a husband. She meets Lord Barwood who would make a great catch so it seems but he is nothing like her. She loves reading novels and is much more interested in TImothy Rutherford, a childhood friend of her brother. They both have so much in common and as they continue going to the festivities during the season their feelings for each other only get stronger. Lord Barwood is determined to marry Lady Katharine and it wasn’t until Timothy overhears why Lord Barwood is determined to marry Lady Katharine that things start to change and the secret of Timothy’s career and the true feelings of Lady Katharine and Timothy come out. The likable characters with integrity and honorable natures are the highlight in this novel, not to mention the sound foundation the author establishes as to how and why the lovers reach their love story. As old friends, Lady Katherine and Timothy find common ground in the love for the written word and respect for each other’s strengths and good characters. Their romantic feelings for each other is out to the test when duty to family and fear of rejection come to the fore in their minds. Even the threat by a supposedly eligible nobleman will not stop their feelings, and it takes a sudden engagement for them to gather their strength to fight for their love. Another element is how crafty the author is in establishing and preparing the readers for the succeeding installments of this book series. The matter of the Will of the father, the Duke, gave rise to the need for the Willoughby siblings to find people to marry; lest, risk losing their fortunes. What an intriguing and drastically life-changing dilemma! What caused the star deduction despite how well-written and placed this story is stems from how hurried the ending is. With the revelation done almost at the very end, the author leaves very little space for romantic exchanges and declarations between the lovers, which is quite disappointing.March 17, 2024

The more I read about Lord Barwood the more I disliked him. There is someone else who is interested but he’s afraid to voice his love for Lady Katharine for fear of rejection. The book caught my attention from the first chapter in which a shocking and dramatic event sets in motion a cruel will that acts as a ticking-time bomb that could forever destroy the happiness of Katherine and her family. Life in Rgeency Times
One of many “regency era” books by this author, I find the fun to read. I think it is quite interesting to see the rules that were in place for the proper way to behave in English society. The restrictions placed on women were so binding but in reality, men often had restrictions also. What I have liked in Sheldon’s books is the fact that she develops strong women characters. Her young debutants are thinkers and readers, usually speaking their minds and doing what they please. I find it interesting they do this within the confines of the proper rules of etiquette of the era. While this may not be great literature, for the style it is written, it is well done. False Pretenses
This is a story where a controlling father continues to control from the grave. When the Willoughby siblings found out what their father insisted upon to obtain the inheritance, it seemed the heaviest burton was put upon by his daughter Katharine. Each had to marry within the year, but Katherine had to marry first. William the eldest was concerned about Katharine being taken advantage of and asked his friend Timothy to help keep an eye on her. Timothy was a shy and uncertain person so was not very forward. He had feelings for Katharine but felt feelings would not be returned. So, in helping to keep an eye on her they engaged in several conversations about books, where Katharine was getting to know Timothy better. Katharine was being pursued by a rather eager, controlling gentleman that her mother kept pushing on her. Katharine spending time with this gentleman and getting to know him knew she would be in a marriage where she would be miserable, but she knew she had to marry so her brothers could move forward to satisfy the will. Well written, full of drama, love, romance, society, emotions, intrigue and twists. Katherine is a young lady who loves to read her novels but really likes to spend time outside riding, walking and just having fun. Her father , the Duke, is a very hard man who likes to rule his children. After his death, the will is read they all find out that he has made their lives terrible. Timothy is the second son of an Earl, who has left his father’s home to make a living on hs own. He loves being a writer of novels. He is the friend of Katherine’s brothers. Add in a rotten Lord who wants to marry her and you get a real page turner. You may not be able to put this book down. Can’t wait for the next one. Would strongly recommend to all.March 12, 2024

Such a wonderful love story!
This is my second book I’ve read by Dorothy Sheldon, and she never disappoints. I didn’t even know I liked regency novels, until I stumbled on hers. This story follows Katharine’s journey as she is given the nearly impossible task of marrying within a year so she and her brothers can gain their inheritance. Unfortunately, the will also states that her brothers can’t marry before her, and she has to be the one to marry first. She is stuck in the awful position of rushing to marry when all she wants to do is marry for love, and with someone she’s compatible with. It is while she’s attending event upon event to meet the possible suitor that she starts to talk to William’s best friend Timothy. Timothy is nothing like all the other men that are trying to marry Katharine. They have much more in common than anyone else. And Katharine feels herself drawn to Timothy. But Timothy never puts himself in the running for her hand! As the deadline is fast approaching Katharine finds herself engaged and as the wedding is coming near… Timothy is running out of time to speak up or lose the chance to be with Katharine, forever!!! This story is so wonderful. There is so much going on in the story … you will feel it pulling at your heart strings the whole time. *** I want to read a story about William now, and the mystery locket :-)March 11, 2024
