An Arranged Betrothal with a Scarred Viscount: A Historical Regency Romance Novel (Marriages Under Conditions Book 3)

In a society that values beauty and status above all else, Martha Elwood was labeled a wallflower and resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood. Meanwhile, Albert Bennington, scarred and reclusive after a traumatic event, is forced into an arranged marriage he wants no part of. How romantic can a wedding of convenience be?

Five years ago, Miss Martha Elwood had been introduced to London’s High Society. But to her dismay, shortly afterward she was deemed a wallflower by the ton which didn’t help to encourage potential suitors. After five seasons, Martha has made her peace with never marrying and remaining a spinster for the rest of her life. But that all changes when her father arranges a marriage between her and Lord Bennington! A gentleman is renowned for his distinct facial scarring and reclusive lifestyle.

Three years ago, Albert Bennington— the sole heir to the earldom of Balmere—was involved in an altercation with highwaymen, leaving him deeply scarred on the right side of his face. To make matters worse, his beloved Lady Cordelia called off their betrothal. Since then, he has withdrawn from society and has been living a reclusive life in the countryside. But he returns after receiving word from his father. Nothing can prepare Albert for his father’s shocked announcement that he has arranged for him to marry. Albert wants no part of his father’s plans and secretly conspires to push away his intended.

However, an unexpected romance starts to bloom between Albert and Martha. Will they get their happily ever after or will past insecurities keep them apart?

An Arranged Betrothal with a Scarred Viscount is a historical romance novel that you are going to love it. No cheating, no cliffhangers,
and a happily ever after full of romance.

    Not Enough There

I was entertained by being entertained, in love with love as one is from time to time. I thought this is going to be wonderful. One third through I still had some hope but not much. This book is very light. It is light to the point of boring at many points in the story. It needs more fun and funny events or problems for the couple to face separately or together. I would not buy this writer again until she matures and learns how to entertain. Example : Tell me about your day is more than, I have a job. I work. I eat. I sleep. I do it again and again. These bare statements are better than this book. They leave you wanting more information. This writer leaves you not wanting more. She leaves you wanting your money back.

    Needs work

Okay, it had its good points but it feels so amateur. The dialog is far too modern. The hero is likeable but could be so much stronger. He suffered a serious injury at the hands of criminals but took no steps to improve himself and ensure he would be so helpless ever again. The heroine is believable. Innocent and yet resigned to her fate. I liked the way the story was progressing in spite of little hiccups until after the last ball. There were so many strings left hanging. It was a very unsatisfactory closure. Needs a lot of work.

It is UK 1819, not world after WWII

There were so many disturbing things which do not are part of the time. Some examples – War with Napoleon was just ending 1815 – Waterloo, rings any bells? – so young miss of the ton would not be allowed to wonder around shopping centre without a maid. – we are in regency era UK, why coffee? – US has still age limit of 21 year for drinking alcohol. How come unmarried young ladies (girls actually) of the ton would drink wine and champagne like water when there are more appropriate drinks for them – like lemonade? And last – if the earl is called Walter, why he is couple of sentences later called Luke? Walt would be ok, but Luke? What kind of nick name that is for an earl? In the Rogue-book it seems to be forgotten that UK was – and partly still is – a class society. First names only were not used with random footmen and inn-keepers. Earl’s daughter would be Lady Honoria if not Lady .

storyline is not bad. writing needs work.Historical accuracy….

So the basic structure of the work is ok, maybe more promising but the. writing just can’t bear it out. Given the times we live in, I more than once wondered whether this was written by an AI. So I checked the bio and supposedly Ms. Forbes is the grand-daughter of a romantic historical novelist. Hmm….maybe. There were tons of words that were just off, referring to one’s fiance as his lover. The idea that one would be ruined by gossip that two people were getting married though maybe parental intervention? Yeah a big nope. Some gossip ruins, some just interests, some doesn’t even do that. It is also unlikely that anyone who had been out for 5 years would only have dances three times ever. Somebody would have leaned heavily on a young man to get her danced with. And there was no explanation of key points. No development of side characters. If you just want to churn through plots then this book will suit you but otherwise very much factory writing.

An interesting story, but definitely used phrases and terminology that didn’t align with the time period. Also, the kindle formatting was terrible, I was constantly having to scroll, since every line was like a paragraph with large spaces between sentences. Lastly, the author used a character’s name multiple times in one paragraph, frequently and repetitively, very off putting.

    Poorly Written Cliched Tripe

There is nothing original or creative about this book. On top of cliched plot, two dimensional characters and mawkish attempts at emotions it’s as if it were written by a fifth grader. The writing style is stilted and the author clearly doesn’t understand how to keep to a particular tense. Main character is musing to herself and then talks about herself in third person in same sentence? Don’t waste your money. Re-read a Georgette Heyer if you crave a Regency Romance.

Sally Forbes … An Arranged Betrothal with a Scarred Viscount

I forgot to review this book after I first read it, so I’m doing it now. Sally Forbes is one of my favorite authors, but in this case I never quite understood why her early seasons failed. She wasn’t ugly, maybe plain, but Martha’s father is successful, she dances beautifully, and she’s a talented artist. I did feel badly for Albert: he had found the love of his life but when his face was slashed by a highwayman while he was protecting his love, she renounced their engagement. He left London and hides away at the country estate of the earldom he will inherit. These two are irate when their fathers tell them they have betrothed them to someone they don’t even know! Forbes works her plot magic as they meet in strange places and accidentally find common interests. Friends and family members play big roles as they fight their parents. A good read!

    Sweet story, but…..

The story line was not adventurous, but it kept my interest. Less appealing was the awkward grammar. Sentences were sometimes ineptly put together. The author had NO IDEA of how English was spoken 150/200 years ago. The H and h often thought and behaved as if they were young college students in the twenty-first century. The heroine actually thought, we went on a date. Dating was not a concept then. The characters frequently said and did things no one from that era would have. I don’t think this writer had a clue. How did she get through high school English, never mind college courses? Am guessing she skimmed through high school with progressive young teachers who were almost as ignorant of grammar and syntax as she was. She dealt with college classes by enrolling in a lot of creative writing groups taught by people almost as uninformed. Read any of this author’s books in the future? No, no.

    Readable but didn’t grab me

A clean story. A Viscount is scarred in a robbery as he saves his betrothed, who then promptly dumps him. He becomes a reclusive and scorned by the ton. Then there is a proposed arranged marriage with a lady who is a rapidly becoming a spinster. It is a pleasant read but I found it odd it is never really explained why Martha is forced into this by her father. Yes he’s concerned as a spinster she will be on her own, but it feels as if there should be more as to why it’s the Viscount who everyone seems to despise. It also seems Martha is not that unattractive, is intelligent and can dance etc, her family is wealthy and respected, so why does she never get asked to dance, even just out of courtesy? I’m sure some men would court her if only because of the family wealth. I also found for me there was just too much of the main characters thoughts. There are also some Americanisms in the language although it’s not too bad. So I vacillated between 3 and 4 stars and finally went for 3. In reality it’s probably a 3.5.

I’m an avid reader of Regency romance, and overlook a lot of minor period stuff if the story is good. The slips in this book kept accumulating. For example, pain medication administered by injection, family arrives together for dinner but only father and son depart, gentlemen leave the dining room after dinner instead of the ladies adjourning, etc. Too bad, I was looking forward to it.

With his handsome face scarred, Cordelia rejected him and married someone else. Albert and Martha were two insecure misfits in a shallow society that valued good looks above all else. A sweet story that captivated from the beginning

This story captivated me from the beginning. Martha and Albert both have self doubts, he because of a physical disfigurement, and she because she sees herself as an unattractive spinster. When this marriage is first arranged for them, both wish to try to find a way out of it. Their personal insecurities, fueled by the vicious gossip of the ton, cause them to doubt the blossoming attraction that they feel. Of course, love wins out in the end. A lovely plot and likable side characters make this one a winner! There are a few minor editing issues that could have used another run past an editor before publication, but it wasn’t enough to distract me from the story. The ton loves nothing more than to gossip and are always on the lookout for fresh meat

The gossip can be vicious among the upper class and the servants are just as bad. After having his face slashed protecting his fiancé and then having her reject him for his beastly face, Albert withdrew totally from society for three years. Martha had been deemed a spinster from her first season and was totally fine with the concept. Their fathers had other ideas and arranged a (very unwelcome) marriage between them. Sally Forbes is a skilled writer and I was immersed in this from the first page. The premise and execution of the story was well done and believable. There was just enough description to move the story along without it becoming overbearing. Clean. I received this as an ARC but I also purchased it for my library.

Clean romance. Beauty and the beast

Sally has written an enjoyable tale of An arranged marriage between a lovely young woman and a scarred and rejected man. Just enough angst at to tell their story but no lingering dramatic paragraphs as they search their fears and face their future. Good dialogue. happy ending. A nice Saturday story to curl up with.

The main characters don’t drown in their own emotions.

For most of this engaging story, self-pity or the main characters jumping to conclusions was kept to a minimum even when some of the other characters attempted to cause problems for them. I read every word instead of skipping pages when one of the main characters reverts to revisiting the same problem or approaching another problem in the same way. I liked these characters and rooted for them to solve their situation like adults.

    Arranged Marriage for Love

Honestly I love this author but was hesitant if it would be predictable storyline. I was very pleased with the surprise of how Albert Bennington became scarred and the response of society/fiancee for his heroics (meaning that appearances and rumors carry more weight then truth). I loved Martha Elwood’s acceptance yet sadness over becoming a spinster. Her father cared more than she originally thought with an arranged marriage without her knowledge, and I love a happy ending. It was a sweet great romance by Sally Forbes!

    Martha and Albert.

If you are looking for drama then this is the book to pick it and added plus it is a very good story. The hero has to marry because his elder brother has past and he will need an heir. The heroine is a lady who is overlooked and is concerned a wallflower. Their parents arrange their marriage. There are challenges and a bit of suspense but this is a very well written historical that was a joy to read.

This is the story of a scared Viscount Albert and Martha

I loved this book. This is the story of Martha and Albert. Viscount Albert had been betrothal w someone before. However, their coach had been attacked and Albert had fought hard to protect his betrothal. Albert was scared by the attackers with a knife. He became a big scandal as he was rejected by all. The ton started rumors and staring of Albert. He became a recluse in his country estate. One year his father demanded he come to London, where he told Albert that he had arranged a betrothal for him to Martha. This is the story of Martha and Albert. What I did not like was the common way albert handled his problems was by drinking. Also I felt so sorry for Albert he deserved someone who could see his personality instead of just his looks.

A scarred face may bring you down a few notches, but make your heart better…

Two people who had no real reason for feeling inferior—being young and members of a privileged class—let their peers convince them that they are terribly inferior.. Well, this is a lovely story about how Albert and Martha let love into their hearts and got healed from listening to what others had to say about them. They were able to recognize their own worth and overcome their totally uncalled for inferiority complex… As for Albert’s former betrothed, the bottom line is “pretty is as pretty does”?? Albert should thank the powers of the universe that he was able to see beyond the pretty face smiling at him, when everything was “honky dory.” As a famous Ancient Greek adage goes, “bad things happen. Look for the smattering of good that’s always there.” This read is all about that… Enjoy!

An Arranged Betrothal with a Scarred Viscount

This is a fantastic book. I love the fact this book is clean with no sexual scenes and unnecessary language. Authors like this prove great romances can be written without unnecessary scenes and language. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, it in no way influenced my opinion and this is my honest review.

    Angel among us

I liked this book for different reasons. First, it shows how cruel and mean people can be. Then it shows how some have compassion for others. The storyline is wonderful and the book is well written. The main female character’s name should be Angel. (Received an advance copy from the author and am writing an honest review)

Poor Albert scared from a highway man’s attack, dumped by his betrothed. Could love ever come his way? He doubted it until Martha came into his life. Great love story.

    Outside scars don’t count

In a heart that truly loves…outside scars don’t count. In a world where beautiful people think highly of other remember beauty is only skin deep. This book really touched my heart. So many obstacles to overcome. I recommend this book highly.

    Sweet found love

Well written, full of drama, suspense, love, romance and the Ton. Albert was scarred by a highway man on his face, leaving him to be a second son and not having to marry. Martha has been a wallflower by the Ton her first season, both have issues to deal with. Then Albert’s brother dies, he now has to marry to provide a heir, so a match is made by his father. Neither want this match but after spending time together their feelings change and love is in the making. Excited that they get their happily ever after. Another great book by this author. Would recommend this book to everyone. I am an ARC and leave this unbiased, honest review.

    Clean read

I usually like this author’s books and again she writes another clean and sweet romance. This is about Albert and Martha who were put in an arranged betrothal. Albert insists on a courtship for about three weeks and during that time they both get to know each other and end up happily married. Of course there is is tons slander and more to overcome before that happens. This story I personally feel could have been more fleshed out and as far as the situation with Cordelia, I feel that warranted more time and explanation all the way around. The same goes for the relationships between his cousin and aunt and uncle that was brought into the story early on. It just seems this story wasn’t finished enough. That’s just my personal opinion of course. But it was a clean and sweet read that ended happy

Beauty is more than what you see

Two fathers arrange their children’s marriage. One wants an heir and the other wants to secure his daughter’s future. Both persons feel that they might be able to get out of the arrangement if the other calls it off. As they get to know each other their feelings change, but they never vocalize it to the other. The old fiancée appears and rumors start. Will the hero be able to explain his actions? This story had a lot of drama. I felt at times the narrative revolved too much on their feelings about getting out of the arrangement, I didn’t feel it had to be brought up again and again. I like the hero’s friend’s son. He was a joy to read about. I also liked that the extended epilogue was included in the book.
