Friendship into Love
This is a story of friendship that evolves into love. Eliza is disappointed when her father announces a marriage of convenience to William, as she had her heart set on Richard. William is pleased, as his feelings for Eliza have grown over the past year. The story is a little drawn out as they spend each day of December engaged in Christmas activities. The storm, though dramatic, pulled me back into the narrative. Tragedy has a way of clarifying our true emotions, and it reveals that they loved each other all along; their love simply matured into a lasting bond.March 9, 2025

sweet, but predictable.
Though a sweet, romantic story, it was long drawn out with too little of a story line. Needs more action and/or suspense.November 11, 2024

Duty, Desire, Doubt and Destiny
Author Amanda Stones has presented us with a deeply pensive pair with a lifelong connection, who are loath to place that friendship in jeopardy for the sake of a union born out of necessity. Set in a backdrop of Christmas, the story is charming, but in need of a good edit. Particularly in need of proofreading are character names, which are regularly mixed up, and compound words, which are consistently and puzzlingly broken apart. One wonders if faulty software might be responsible for the latter? Also, the author demonstrates an awkwardness with the English language in such wording as funny shade of white to describe clenched knuckles blanched from fear, as well as repeatedly referring to the Christmas season as the Christmas period. Additional edits should include clarification of who was driving the sleigh that overturned, as well as correction of redundancies occurring a short distance apart, such as within the same paragraph. A more serious grammatical error occurs in chapter 10: …it seemed like Eliza and him might have gotten their friendship back on track. Try instead: …it seemed like Eliza and he might have gotten their friendship back on track. Also in chapter 10, the author uses the phrase upcoming betrothal, when the betrothal had already been announced publicly a few chapters previously. Perhaps upcoming nuptials would be more logical? Otherwise, kudos to the author for a memorable story with creative use of metaphor throughout.March 8, 2024

Disappointing
A clean story a at least as far as I read. I did not finish this book, I got about half way. . The premise for the story I thought was interesting. However, it seemed lack lustre and dragged to my mind. There was too much of the main characters internal thoughts. The female characters kept being addressed incorrectly. An unmarried daughter of an Earl or high status would be Lady First Name , NOT Lady Last Name, that would be her mother! How Catherine and Eliza were addressed alternated between these two. And then there is Lady Margaret who is an Aunt. It is likely she had been/ was married so would be Lady Last Name although it was not clear if she was married. William and Eliza become betrothed but do not meet to discuss it until a ball and then have no time on their own. Given their parents acknowledge their concerns o am sure they would have arranged for them to have time together rather than just announce it at a ball the next day when they have literally just laid eyes on each other. And then they never seemed to discuss it as the days passed. Why not, both felt the need, just unrealistic. And if it’s so important why is there no mention of wedding dates? Then we have the sleigh ride from which they are both thrown as it goes too fast and seems out of control, and then get back into sleigh which is horse drawn. There are other sleighs, no one stops and comes to help? Who is driving the sleigh, absolutely no mention. I doubt it was William as no mention of him trying to slow the horse(s), so you assume a servant. What happened to them? How come the sleigh stopped where they came out. If it was travelling too quick and they were thrown out surely it would have carried on and been a fair way off. Richard seems upset that Eliza is now betrothed, but as he is well known to her father and Eliza had been expecting him to propose for some time so really some is his own fault for not doing anything. Maybe it’s explained later in the book but as said I did not finish it. I usually manage to finish a book, but I just could not go on with this one.January 31, 2024

This story was very beautiful. It was heartwarming and tender. Worth the read. I did find that the story might have been better if the climax had been longer as many questions about Eliza’s family had been resolved.January 5, 2024

Friendship leading to love eliminates obscurity
This is a sweet novel about how childhood friends become romantically entwined. In this case, it is the gentleman, Lord William Hartley, who discovers of romantic love towards his dear friend, who he always viewed as a sister. While Lady Eliza Beaumont took a little longer to discern her feelings towards Lord William. It does not help matters when their own fathers arranged a marriage of convenience between the two to ensure that their family names are united and their estate combined amidst the Beaumont family facing financial distress. It’s easy for Lord William as his feelings have been there for sometime. For him, it’s no marriage of convenience. But for Lady Eliza, it’s more complicated, especially when another eligible suitor comes into the picture. It’s an enjoyable historical romance but this reader has some misgivings about the characterization. Hence, the star deductions. Despite being a respected and well-loved and mentored gentleman of nobility, Lord William Hartley is uncharacteristically and illogically severely lacking of self confidence. That doesn’t make sense. He could’ve save so much heartache for himself and Lady Eliza if he only expressed his feelings, regardless of acceptance or rejection. Second, Lady Eliza is unconsciously callous and quite immature at times especially when the other suitor appears. She disregards an old friend while giving attention to a gentleman who she doesn’t even know. There is not much angst in this story which somehow lessens the lovers’ ordeals and the story’s impact. The writing is at uneven and inconsistent. Slow paced at times and fast in others, there are also sections which can be done without. Nevertheless, the author ought to be commended for her effort.December 26, 2023
