    Redundancy is this overlong story

The worst written of her novels. The book inserts new information without any background regarding the characters, also giving credence to employees who could have no sway w the Ton and redundancy beyond readability!

    Too long

It took too long to get to the point. Very repetitive. I felt there could have been a lot more intrigue.

    Needs some editing

There needs to be more editing done to make it a more comfortable read. I enjoyed the plot. The heroine is in charge of her mother and younger sister. The scarred duke is moody and protective of his heart. He summons the heroine to his manor due to some business with her late father. She is not repulsed by his scars. A villain is thrown into the mix. There is suspense in the story that kept me reading.

    Past Secrets

Duke Graham Morland has secluded himself since an accident scarred him and it seemed everyone turned away from him. But he sent a letter to Eloise Lennox and requested her appearance at his manor. The letter mentioned something of debts that concerned her family. Once there she is mystified by the duke, even though he had a scar she was not repulsed at all but found his behavior strange and for some reason she was determined to help him. He mentioned a scandalous past that involved his family and hers but would tell her nothing else. Eloise was determined to find out this past and make sense of it, but unknown to both of them there was someone manipulating the circumstances for revenge. ARC Review

The Beast and the Spinster find love in the most unconventional circumstance

This historical romance presents two people who would not have likely encountered each other if not for the unusual circumstances that bind their families. Spinster Eloise Lennox, the daughter of a wealthy tradesman, is still reeling from the death of her father and the responsibility of caring for an ailing mother and a very young sister. She is summoned to Draycott Manor due to some transactions her deceased father involved himself. The one who summons her is no other than the Duke of Draycott, Lord Graham Morland, known by the ton as the Beast due to his cold demeanor, hardness of heart, uncouth manners and physical scars. These two lead characters are very interesting character studies. They shift from opposite poles: at times strong and then weak, at times confident and yet doubtful; there are many instances when these characters change depend on the situation and conversations they are in. However, in essence, they are who they are to the core: Eloise is brave, courageous, compassionate, empathetic, kind and tries to look for the good in people. Which is how she managed to tolerate the mood swings of Lord Graham, who is aloof and withdrawn, at times cruel and abusive. It is his scars both physical and emotional, the loss of all family and the lack of affection and love that hardened him. Leave it up to Eloise to thaw him and show him that he is the bot the horrible person he projects and thinks himself to be. It is the revelations of an evil schemer that put the Eloise and Graham at the crossroads. Will they hang on to the hope of love and a future together or give in to their doubts and mistrust of each other? Once the Duke decides with his heart, there is no turning back. While as for Eloise, the Duke has been in heart all along, just holding on to hope that he may have some feeling and affection for her. What prompted the star dedications are some aspects about the story. Typographical errors. Gaps or loopholes in some parts (the most important of which is the impropriety of Eloise staying at Graycott Manor without any plausible explanations) . Repetition of words and phrases. Despite the previous paragraph, this is highly enjoyable due to the romance aspect, as well as character development.

Great gothic atmosphere but the plot was lacking

The story started out very interesting and the atmosphere being reminiscent of traditional gothic romances was delightful. However, things began to frustrate me. Eloise was sent a letter from the duke summoning her to his manor to settle things from her father’s past. (Why wasn’t her mother the one that was summoned?) Then, the duke would not explain to Eloise what he wanted from her or why she was there and HE didn’t even know. He would just keep telling her not to ask about the scandal but that was WHY she was there . . . to find out what he wanted her to do about it! She was unmarried and rarely had her maid or anyone around to chaperone her. She dug through letters in the manor to find out what the past scandal even was about. Rumors flew because she was basically living with the duke. Mr. Fenton was the one behind the embezzlement and scandal that occurred between the duke’s mother and Eloise’s father. Mr. Fenton fled after it came to light and yet for some reason (which I cannot figure out), his son, also named Mr. Fenton, was hired as the current duke’s steward even though the duke knew exactly who he was. (Was there no other steward available to be hired in all of England?) Furthermore, the duke was actually listening to his every poisonous word like it was gospel. It was very unbelievable and left me unable to really enjoy the book. The plot and its details, unfortunately, did not make sense. If the kinks in the plot had been thoroughly worked out, this would have been a great book.

    A vengeful villain

When Graham and Eloise meet, it is strictly for business purposes. However, their relationship slowly turns to a totally different matter. Stir in meddling, gossip-loving neighbors as well as a vengeful villain, and the story really heats up! Enjoyable read.
